This thread is an attempt to prevent the complete hijacking of one of Lemon Throwers threads.

I bought a bag of pennies from a bank the other day. They said it was $100. I weighed it when I got home. 59.2#.

I figure a bag of pure zinc would weigh 55# That means that there are 4.2# additional = 1907 grams divide by .61 grams (additional weight of a copper penny) = 3125 copper pennies in the bag. That would be 31.25%

Am I right on this?

I think you are in the ballpark.. but I might come up with a slightly different copper estimate. Maybe we should have a contest for members to guess the final copper count of the bag. Do you have an accurate counter for the final tally? I would be willing to put up an Indian as a prize for the closest guess.
How accurate is your scale?
Is it a canvas bag or a plastic coin shipment bag?

Let me know if you want to do a contest.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I think you can set up one of those two variable, two equation matrix and solve for the copper count pretty fast. Maybe that is what the original poster did. If you know that the exact count of pennies ( ~ 10,000) and have the weight of the bag and exact weight of a copper penny and a zinc one, what do they call that , a set of simultaneous equations? It has been a few years since I did my college math. Anyway, if there is a quick formula table to use, it could be handy weighing bags in teh field. Of course, the heavier the better -ie- more copper and less zinc.

I ran through a home made calculator and came up with 7490 zinc and 2510 copper +/- 3% assuming the scale is correct and the face value is correct.
Good luck. Contest or no, I'd like to know if possible how close I was or wasn't.

Copper = C
Zinc = Z

C + Z = 10,000
3.1C + 2.5Z = 26852.6683

C = 10,000 - Z
3.1(10,000 - Z) + 2.5Z = 26852.6683
Z = 6912.2
C = 10,000 - 6912.2
C = 3087.8

30.8% copper

Made a quick copper approximator in Excel if anyone wants it. Just adjust the values in the yellow cells. I'm interested to see how accurate it really is

Nothing is ever exact. There is wear on the pennies, so they won't be full weight.

OK.. I swapped PM's with knibloe and he agreed to do all the hard work if we have a contest. So here it is:
This is a 3 way contest.. 3 chances to win, but a limit of one prize per person.
An Indian head penny will be awarded to the winner of each contest. The winner can choose to have the Indian shipped directly to them, or I can ship it to TenBears to store with your silver.
Contest 1 - # of copper cents in the $100 bag.. this includes wheats and canadian copper.
Contest 2 - # of wheat cents in the bag
Contest 3 - # of Copper Canadian cents in the bag (steels and zincs don't count)

Tie breaker on the last 2 will be your guess in the alternate small count contest. Second tie breaker if still tied will be your guess in the big count contest.
One set of guesses per person.
No editing your guess after initial posting.
Limit of 1 prize per person. If you win more than one you get bragging rights but the second prize goes to the next best guess.. this way we can have more winners.
Your guess on the total copper count should be unique.
Your guess on the other 2 contests can be the same as someone else.. you just have to hope to beat them on the tiebreaker.
All guesses must be posted on this thread by the end of the day Saturday, midnight forum time.
Good luck in the contests.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Since I hand sort, I weigh my 82s for copper. The zincs are 80% 2.6g and 20% 2.5g and the coppers are 80% 3.1g and 20% 3.0g. I factored that into my calcs assuming the same for all cents.
There are occasional 2.9g or 3.2g coppers and an occasional 2.4g zinc.

Thanks for sponsoring the contest HCBTT! This should be fun

I weigh all my boxes and bags in kg, and calculate approximate cu yield. The calculation is simple and I posted it in the yield thread earlier. For a contest like this the difficulty comes in estimateing the weight of the container, as well as factors such as wear, debris, and canadian pennys.

My guess is 2343 copper pennies, 47 wheats, 19 Canadian, no indian.

Good luck to all.

My guess is as follows:

Total coppers: 3102
Total wheats: 37
Total Canadian copper: 13

Zero Indians because they don't exist in the wild.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark
