I have for some time seen and liked all the copper bullion bars on eBay but the prices seem to be extremely expensive! Does it make sense to buy copper like this?

What is the upside or downside in doing so?

If copper is at $3.7215 / lb how can the prices of the bars be justified. I have been told in the past that the spot price quoted is for scrap “dirty” copper versus the more pure copper like that sold on eBay.

Again my question: Is it worth investing in this type of bullion bar or are you crazy for doing so because you can still get 95% copper pennies at face?

Bars like this cost a lot more than the spot price of copper to mint. They are also art and their price reflects that art.

You can find industrial bars like these for closer to the spot price of copper but they usually only sell them in huge amounts. They are made for industrial applications and are not stamped .999 or in ounces or pounds.

Spot copper price is not the price for scrap copper either #1 copper or #2 copper.

Producing copper is not easy. At artmetal.com http://tinyurl.com/5llgzn you will find a lot of posts whining about the difficulties. So any kind of fabricated metal, even ingots, will cost you at least three times spot. Add some margin for somebody to shine them and stamp them with weight and purity and you get $25 a pound.

I'm still trying to find a source for copper ingots and cathode at or near spot at pallet size quantities. So far all the sellers want contracts in the hundreds or thousands of tons per month. Nobody will sell me a single one-ton pallet of ingots that I can just go pick up with a trailer.

I had been hoping to find a source and then resell on this board at a minimal markup... but it's not going to be as easy as I thought. If somebody knew somebody at one of the places that buy at this kind of scale it might be possible to get a few tons out the back door for cash, but right now it's looking grim.

Interesting...Please put me on the list when someone does the group order for the Australian bars. If someone has the other bars for sell at a decent price closer to spot let me know!

I keep trying to find any odd ways to get copper as well. So far, nothing.

Are you throwing that out?

There is plenty of copper of eBay if you are willing to pay $20 pound, plus postage! LOL
There has to be a cheaper source.....

So far the best way I've found is when I'm taking it out of old electric motors I find! However, this is a bit different from having bars. I did score a copper plate at a yard sale once, I got it in a "fill a bag for a dollar" sale!

Are you throwing that out?

Hi board,
Just wanted to confirm what Saul Mine had said in his post about the production of copper bullion. I am relatively new in the field but can attest to the fact that it does take quite a bit of time and effort just to get a mirror finish on the bars. To take it a step further and design and fabricate the die which will be used to stamp the company's name, logo and other is also quite a task.

Being a seller of bullion, I can say that I have yet to find copper at spot unless I was willing to purchase a huge amount, and I have searched for months.

If anyone out there is able to find some I would love to know!
Great Forum btw!

Brownstone_Metals, welcome to the site. Nice looking product.

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Steady looking for the elusive Indian head....
