I have the set from my birth year and I was thinking they might make a nice collectible/investment. Anyone else buy them? The silver ones or just the regular proofs? Here's the link: http://tinyurl.com/939s6

I'm always looking to trade copper pennies for silver. PM me to work out a deal.

I buy a few sets of silver proof sets every year. Why not?

Deal

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

I like the ones from the 30's.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

We have some. The one I like the most is the 1963 silver set.

I just picked up 15 proof sets - 1964 unopened flat packs for $14.99 - free shipping & no tax.
Very common, I know but I thought that was a real good price considering the price of silver these days.

Are the Brown Box Ikes the same as the "Blue Chip" Ikes? I have some of those.

I just bought this from the US mint today: http://tinyurl.com/33trjx

I think because this is the first year of the presidential dollar coin series this could potentially be valuable at some point down the road.

I get a few sets every year, as well as some separate dollar sets, you never know. I'm not really a dollar coin fan, but that doesn't stop me from buying the first day coin covers as well.... My '99 silver proof sets have definitely gone up.

The Brown box Ikes are the actual Proof strikes in 40% silver. The Blue Ikes are 40% also, but are not Proof strikes. I have all the Blue ones, but I still need two of the Brown ones.

Are you throwing that out?

Gotcha. I knew the Blue Chips were just uncirculated 40%, never heard of the Browns. Thanks for the information.

Deal

p.s. Which ones are you missing?

A prestige set is a special set of Proof U.S. coins that includes the normal denominations, plus one or more of the Proof commemorative coins issued that year. they are very nicely put together, and good looking. The '96 is worth around 475 dollars, according to PCGS price guide.

I'm missing '72 and '73. '73 is kind of the key and usually runs about $20-30. Not to much, I know, but I always seem to find so many interesting items at that price (read higher silver%)that I always end up getting something else!

Are you throwing that out?

I just picked up this too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320249195245&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=011

I guess due to the short title it went for $5-$10 less than what they normally go for.

Every year for many years I order about 10 to 15 Proof sets and 10 to 15 Uncirc sets from the Mint. Most are for Christmas Presents. I always keep several for myself. Been doing this for as long as I can remember. Think I started this somewhere in the 1950's. All go into a large box and never looked at again. Very big box now.

Wow Carl, thats pretty impressive. I think I will start buying a set every year for me now...

Do you plan to eventually sell them or pass them down to family?

I've been in my local coin shop when people have come in to sell their multi-year accumulation of proof sets. The dealer (one of the largest volume dealers in Milwaukee) generally pays the sellers 20% BELOW Grey Sheet Bid. He then resells them to other dealers at 10% back of bid. Retail buyers pay Grey Sheet Bid plus a few percent.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I've no idea of what the future holds for all those. Same with my entire collection of well over 60 years. We all mostly think we will last forever, but oh to soon the end comes and what happens to all our belongings is sometimes a horrible experience.
