I found a 1964 Sierra Leone half-cent in a roll of nickles. I believe it is from West Africa... Might be worth about $2.00 Not bad finding it in a nickle roll. Also found 3 silver nickles and a 1936(S)Buffalo nickle in the $100 box I went through tonight.
Anyone else finding some weird coins in some nickle rolls?

Over time and many boxes (all from Canadian Nickels):
International Coins:
3 Cuban 10 centavos (local not tourist version) in different boxes
1 Cayman Islands 10 Cent Coin
1 Twenty Pence 1983 from the UK (CuNi)
1 5 cent New Zealand coin
1 25 cent? 1972 Philipines coin
1 Thai coin labeled "1" and a bunch of writing I can't read
US Coins:
1 no date buffalo (in Canada)
1939 US Nickel
8 complete rolls of US Nickels from a Canadian bank
A whole box with about 30% US Nickels, and very few modern steel anything.
Never found a US silver war nickel yet, though I need to check back through some of my US rolls as I was not looking for them when I first started. (edit - just needed to wait - have found two now!)
Canadian Coins:
1923 CDN Nickel (first ever seen by me)
1 poor grade 1945 V Nickel
A handful of 1940's, and 1950's (rare to find anyting without the queen on it though)
1 1943 Tombec with great toning (not in the wild really, my grandmother gave me her small lose coin collection)
Occasional dimes and pennies mixed in.
May 23/08:
Started sorting a block of 10 and the first roll is neatly labeled: 1951 = 36 1970=4 OH YA the first ever time I have seen the 1951 200th anniversery of the discovery of Ni in all my sorting!
Next roll labeled: 1972-1977
Next roll not labeled but all: 1960-1974
Next roll labeled: 21-1955-58 and 19 George (1X38, 1X44, 2X45, 1X46, 3X47, 3X49, 8X52 Steel!, 9X56, 4X57, 8X58)
Next roll labeled 1967=23-->: Sure enough 23 Centennials with another 17 1965-1977 mixed.
Next roll: 100% 1965/66 mix
Next roll: first coins out are 4 US from the 60's. Then my very first Silver war nickel - a 1942 with mint mark! Rest of roll was 63/64 CDN.
Seven CWR rolls from someone dumping a stash in one block - I just love presorted Nickels! This has really helped my percentages, and helps make up for the blocks I got today that looked really new.

The San Francisco mint. Where the coin was minted. The mint marks were made large during the "silver" years with the idea that they would be easy to recognize and remove from circulation after the war.

I'm so sick over pennies....I frequently trade a dime or two for the whole "take-a-penny" container if sufficient coppers exist. That will get you some odd looks.

Found one yesterday in a $100 box. I have only obtained the 50 roll boxes from the banks a few times but have found in each instance a silver nickel from them. Of course, I find a bunch of 1964 nickels too and the occasional pre-'81 Canadian nickel. A few non-war 1940's and 1950's nickels are found too. Nickels pose easier sorting by eye than pennies but I am not all that thrilled I have to tie up $100 for a spell. That is four $25 boxes of pennies, lol. |

That big mint mark was pretty effective in getting the war nicks removed from circulation - I've found only two war nicks in the nearly two boxes of Jeffs pulled from Canadian nickel rolls so far. 1 P and 1 S
Adding to international finds:

More UK pennies while sorting pennys - they jamp the Ryedale Everytime

| I still get a kick out of finding those 67 rabbits in the wild, even if there is no real rarity value. Usually they are in really nice shape. The Georges are always cool to find too (only ever the VI's for me so far). I've found a couple of the tombacs in boxes so far ('42s) and one war "V" design ('44). One of those refinery design 51's would be really cool to find in the wild at some point. There is an online retailer on ontario advertising a special on rolls of those, thinking of picking some up. |

Broke two full bins of nickels tonight - about $600 worth. Finds include:
1 1951 nickel factory
1 Thai coin
1 Canadian Quarter!
3 Canadian Dimes
1 Proof 1986 Canadian Nickel (worn, but never found one in the wild before)
6 famous player and "no cash value" gaming tokens
2 pennies - 1 US zinc, 1 cdn copper.
And got a note from a teller I met in Vancouver. Will post that in another thread.

1 Bolivia Coin 2006 and in great shape.
1 South Africa Coin
3 dimes
Several steel war nickels (blue tinged)- these are very hard to find in the wild! |
