It's been in the news a lot more lately. Talking about the production costs of pennies and nickels. Steel as an alternative. You never know these days....

According to this article, the legislation is making its way through the process. Maybe Bush will veto it. It's already passed the House.

I wonder if I should keep the 3 boxes I was going to take back tomorrow...
If the legislation does get to the Presidents desk and he doesn't veto it, would there be a run on nickels...
Those 3 boxes yielded 3 war nick's, 8 100% Canadians and 2 pennies(1 was copper).

| I got $80 last Wednesday which yielded 3 war nickels. Got a box on Saturday and got 1 war nickel. |

I get this approximate ratio.
1 Pure Ni 2 CuNi 4 Year 2000+ to dump 7 total parts
I am sorry bit I am bit confused by these numbers. Maybe it is just me.
Could you give us a specific like "after $50 sorted I get these percenatages".
Many thanks

Sure - These are just rough estimates based on sorting out close to $ 2000 face in Nickels. First I seperate any rolls that are still mint wrapped, and as I don't sort them, they don't count.
I have three sandwich sized plastic dishes. I fill them to the brim, then roll. I fill the 2000+ dish about 4X as often as the Pure Ni dish. I fill the CuNi dish about 2X as often as the pure Ni.
I also get some US coins - but less than 1/3 of the pure Ni ones. Also see a few international coins, pennies etc mixed in. |

Tonight's sort found this roll count (ignoring misc leftover coins) Rolls 10.29% 7 55-81 = .99 Ni 20.59% 14 82-98 = CuNi 13.24% 9 US (included 6 full US Rolls) 55.88% 38 2000+ (Back to Bank)
100.00% 68 Plus 1 US Silver Nickel (second to date), 1 X 5 cent New Zealand, 1 X 1945 V, and handful of Kings. But if you take out the full US rolls, but leave in random US coins you get: Rolls 11.29% 7 55-81 = .99 Ni 22.58% 14 82-98 = CuNi 4.84% 3 US (Random US mixed in) 61.29% 38 2000+ (Back to Bank)
100.00% 62
Compared to my rough overall sorting estimate of: Parts 13.64% 1.00 55-81 = .99 Ni 27.29% 2.00 82-98 = CuNi 4.50% 0.33 US = CuNi 54.57% 4.00 2000+ (Back to Bank)
100.00% 7.33
Conclusion - tonight's verofied sample of 62 rolls (plus 6 full US rolls) came up pretty close to my rough average. |

You are out on the west coast, yes.
It looks like the Mint is running a little faster out there than around Toronto. I am still getting around 17% Ni, but usually only about 40% steel. But starting yesterday, many of the banks that I rely on have received large shipments from the Mint, so that may change. |

Went through $80 in nickels today and walked away with about 13%. Also around the Vancouver area.

Found a dateless buffie today.
Lately though, it's been slim pickins sorting nickels. Fewer war nix than yesteryear. |

44 rolls Canadian nickels
325 Ni (18.5%)
Just a little higher than the average calculated from samples from 27 different branches (currently 18.3%). |

In what is to come it wont matter what kind of nickel you are holding because the public won't kow the difference all that they will care is that it is a nickel.....same as one oz round of silver, people won't care how pretty it is but only that it is .999 pure.
At this time I am holding 20 bricks of nickel.....I did open one of them and took apart two rolls and found coins from Mexico, Sweden, UK and one more coutry (forgot which one) all that was in only two rolls so who knows what is there in the rest of them.
Almost forgot, I could have about 25 more bricks of nickels mixed with all the coins that I have been saving for the past 31 years. |

I think there is some truth to this, at first many will not know the difference, but as time goes by, most will figure it out. As discussed in another thread, try to get rid of all your lesser value items first, holding the good stuff for the more discerning and knowledgeable traders. |

I sort a lot of nickels and only find the odd international coin in them (other then US which make up maybe 5% of the circulating nickels in Canada).
Those two rolls must be some kind of serious oddity - I'd be looking at more rolls from that box. |

Hand sorted $50 of CWR. One of the rolls was short 2 nickels so whoever rolled it put in a dime, and then put in 4 pennies, for a total $2.04. There was also a dateless buffalo in there too.
Another roll had this Canadian Victory Nickel.

The brown around the edge is rust getting underneath the plating. It's to bad because this coin is in excellent condition otherwise. The obverse has no rust.
The rest of the rolls yielded 1 addditional CuNi Canadian nickel and nothing else.
