Hello All,
I collected pennies when I was younger 12 - 14 years old. Still have my collection. Wheats were alot more common back then. Now 42 with wife and 1 child. Own a consulting business going on 13 years and just bought a 15 barrel beer brewing system (opening in about 1 year after construction of my new building. Started sorting pennies with my daughter about 2 months ago. I have hand sorted $504.00 so far with fair luck.
1 1897 Indian Head 1 1909 VDB 116 Assorted wheats 5 Quarters 2 dimes 1 nickel Averaging about 25% copper
Love seeing those wheats again. Reminds me of my penny collection days when I was younger. |

Welcome to the forum. Wow, fifteen barrel? I take it you are changing careers. Nice. I wish you the best of luck.

Welcome oly1oly1! Congrats on the good finds... I’m with you, I love those wheat pennies. I’m 45 and remember as a kid wheat pennies were in every roll! Not anymore :-( But as least you can still find a few every now and then.

Microbrewery or brewpub (or both)? Where?
I used to do some homebrewing, gave it up about 10 years ago, brewed from grain and it took all day to make 10 gallons, but I'm planning to making a batch of mead soon.
Welcome aboard! Just don't get so caught up in the forum that you let the kettle boil over |

Hello, new member here! I am so glad to find this forum! I had no idea others were collecting pre-1982 pennies, but assumed I was not the only one.
I'm a 49 yr old male, & started coin collecting as a kid in the late '60's. By the time I began, silver coinage had all but disappeared from circulation.
Back in the mid-'70's when a "penny shortage" was caused by rumors that the copper penny was to cease production, I collected a gallon jug of them out of my pocket change (I still have them: lots of really nice specimens from 1974-1976!). It was easy then: every penny was copper & back then all my financial transactions were in cash. After I filled the gallon jug I quit.
Sometime in the '90's it occurred to me that the pre-1982 pennies evntually have to go the way silver did after 1965 & resumed copper penny collecting (again, just from pocket change). I noticed it was slower going as so many of my transactions were by atm/credit card or check, and like many of you I've noticed there is a lot more zinc than copper circulating. It has taken me several years to fill up that second gallon jug!
I had no idea there was such a thing as a "Ryedale" until today!
While I can understand from a collector's point of view there are people willing to pay a small premium for the garden variety wheat cents,is there really a market to sell the 1959-1981 cents at a premium?
Sorry I droned so long. I love this stuff. Oh & I too have found Indian head pennies in my pocket change! |

Thanks legacypac. I have always culled out the wheats, so i doubt my '70's stash has many in it, but I should take a look. As a coin collector, if I came across a real common date & mint mark wheatie that I already had plenty of, many times I'd toss it back into circulation to give some other collector a chance. I don't do that anymore!
One day back in the early '80's while working in the check out stand at a supermarket I opened a CWR of pennies that was ALL wheats! I thought "oh crap, I gotta keep these" and opened up another CWR roll: all wheats agains! Opened up a third CRW roll: all wheats again! Unfortuantely we were super busy at the time & I was not able to avoid handing some of them out in my change, but I sure snagged a bunch of them that day! |

Hi Everyone.....New member here. I have been reading for awhile and I appreciate all of the great tips I have learned here. Thanks! I enjoy searching rolls of coins but probably for reasons different from most of you. I only search by hand and get excited if a roll of coins isn't shorted. Then, if I find some sort of treasure, it is even better.
Thanks again for this site and for all of the valuable information.

A sincere "Thank You" for all the info I have read and learned over the many, many years reading this forum. I'm a roll searcher along with a whole lot of "little ones" pulling out birth years, pretty ones, and anything else they can find as an excuse to keep a penny. On the table is a ice cream pail called a "BoogerBucket" where all the dirty, bent, etc. go and the oldest one takes that along to deposit at her bank for gas money. So no penny ever goes unused. I learned that kids will not save but they will "collect". One piece of wisdom that came with age. Our only problem is we can't find any 2008 pennies and one of our newborns is a 2008 baby. I know this is my first post--and I can't really add anything since everything I know I learned here. I'm so grateful for all of the knowledge you have and will continue to share. Anyone wanting to get rid of some 2008 boxes I'll gladly pay the cost of pennies-shipping-and handling. Since I know litte (make that nothing about computers) you have to contact me, however that is done. Plese don's ask me to cut and paste--well ok, I got the cut part but the Elmers glue sure messed up my keyboard when I got to the paste part. Just remember: every cloud has a copper lining!! | Welcome copper cane. I saw you snag that box of 08 nickels. Nice find for not much over the face value and shipping! |

NotABigDeal, the answer is shame + ignorance = read, don't post! Shame because I've been reading, learning, and following your forum's advice for years. Ignorance, because I know nothing new so best I remain a reader.
The purchase from wagsthadog was great. I'm sure he had better offers but chose to make "12" little collectors very happy. He's the best.
When I have to babysit the "12 wiggles" I just place their piggy banks with their names on them next to a $25 box of pennies. Then I sit back in my "senior citizen" chair and watch the sorting, horse trading, sneaking an extra coin, and asking "What year were you born again (everyone get their birth year coin).
So "thanks to all" and I will be doing more reading than posting. copper cane |

Well I am pretty new here so I thought that I would post.
I am probably one of the youngest members of this forum as for I am only 20! I live in Iowa(anyone else live in iowa?)..I always thought that I would rather live someplace else intill I realized how "sheltered" the midwest is from the worst of things.
I got into precious metals a little over 2 years ago. I am mainly into silver but started getting some gold here recently. Im not really into coins but I learned all about them in order to know whats worth what. I sort halfs at the bank and have done some hand penny sorting. I would buy a ryedal but its hard to pay for a $350+ machine when you are only making .2-.5 cents profit on every copper you find. (Plus you have to factor in the gas and time and everything) |

Welcome to copper cane and to highroller4321. Read, post, search those coins and enjoy.
Copper cane, I too began searching coins for the birth year of my son and it has evolved into much more. A lot of fun.
Enjoy, everyone. |

Greetings all! I was referred here on the GIM forum. I am a silver hoarder when I can be. I usually buy in small lots. I like 90% US silver best, but have a few of the bullion rounds, Maples, and SAE's also. I also have a couple Canadian dollars and a few Mexican silver coins.
Hope I can contribute to the forum. Thanks. TBG |

Hello everyone, My name is Ian and I have been reading messages on this forum for quite some time. Nate from The Copper Cave recently invited me to sign up and I thought that would be a great idea! I originally started investing in shares of gold mining companies about 5 years ago. I got "lucky" and made a nice profit on Desert Sun Mining which was later acquired by Yamana. This spurred a lot of interest in the field and I started collecting a few gold bullion coins. The rest is history and I'm now obsessed with gold bullion, silver bullion, copper bullion, hoarding metals, and tangible wealth in general. I'm a smaller time investor right now and truly believe in the power of hoarding copper pennies one at a time. While not at my day job, I created a website called GoldWhy dot com to discuss my passion for all this great stuff. I have been spending a lot of time over the last year writing for the site and have gotten a great response. I continue to update it regularly and am looking forward to what the new year brings. Happy to be a part of this community! Best, Ian |
