the case for hoarding nickels is that they are real metal, not fiat metal, and will rise with hyperinflation. also, you don't need to sort them.
there are various pundits who believe we will have a bank holiday in the u.s. i have no way to know how likely that is. however, have a few hundred bucks at home in cash to fill up your tank, etc. is prudent, and having it in small denoms that are inflation protected makes a lot of sense.

I think the only issue with hoarding something like US nickels right now is the issue of inflation. As long as the melt value stays around 100%, we'd be losing out to inflation each year we maintian a hoard. It would be just like stuffing paper money under a mattress, only taking up more space in your home.
