My friends have a carpeting/painting/drywall business with 6 work trucks and vans. A couple of nights ago, someone broke into their shop and took the catalytic converters off every single one of the vehicles. The thieves only took the converters and didn't even try to get into the buildings where the tools and supplies are.

The shop is fenced in with chain link with barbed wire over the top, but the thieves just cut right through the fence.

The worst part of all? The police came and the officer filed a report. The next day, my friends talked to the detective working the case. The detective said that he doubted they'd ever find out who did it and set it as a lower priority case. There is a big scrap yard less than five miles from their shop -- I guarantee you that's where the converters ended up. The people there are really nice, so my friends are going over there to see if anybody sold them some catalytic converters.

Sheesh. I feel awful that it happened, especially now, because business has been so slow lately.

No, man. You gotta keep goin'. What am I gonna do? Quit? That's not an option. Life's a garden. Dig it? You make it work for you. You never give up, man. That's my philosophy. --Joe Dirt

Thieves and child molesters, no room for them here....

Deal

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

When he has them replace have the shop wire weld some sort of I.D. marking on them. The local muffler guy here marks them "stolen" in big letters on the side.

Does your city/town have any scrap metal laws, that require payment by check, photo id, etc.? If not it may be time to lobby for such law changes with your local representatives. Insurance companies would also be allies for such changes. Your friends could ask their insurance companies what they might be doing to push such changes. With platinum prices so high, it's certainly an easy way for crooks to make money.

How much platinum in a catalytic converter?
