For each of the metals, what volume constitutes a hoard?
For copper: Is it 1 ton. $10,000 face? Higher? Lower? - My answer: 1 Ton
For US nickel: Is it $10,000 face? Is it 1 ton of nickel? Higher? Lower? - My answer: $5,000 face (essentially a little more in face value than the cents)
For CA nickel: Is it 1 ton (which is $10,000 face. Thank you Canada for nicely weighted coinage!) Higher? Lower? - My answer: $5,000 face
For US 90% Silver: Is it $100 face? $1,000 face? $10,000 face? Higher? Lower? - My answer: $2,000 face ($1,000 face bags are sold/traded every day, so owning just *one* can't be a hoard!)
For US 40% Silver: $1,000 face? $10,000 face? Higher? Lower? - My answer: $2,000 face
For CA 80% silver: $1,000 face? $10,000 face? Higher? Lower? - My answer: $2,000 face
For Gold: 1 pound? 10 pounds? Higher? Lower? - My answer: 2 pounds

Copper - 1 Ton seems about right for a hoard. That's over 100 $25 boxes.
Silver - 10,000+ TOZ in silver (rounds and/or bars) or 10+ $1000 (80% or 90%) bags or 20+ $1000 40% bags seems right for a hoard.
Gold - 10+ kilo bars (22 pounds) or equivalent in AGEs/Maples and/or other coins/bars seems right for a hoard. You gotta be rich (or steal it from a leprachan's pot of GOLD) to have a hoard of GOLD. |

| You've gotta be rich... and you'll stay rich if TSHTF with a gold hoard like that. Got my silver and gold where I want em, now I'm getting started with CU. What about platinum and palladium? |
Hoard now and hold on!

During the SHTF scenario, I believe you will have the copper and nickle (maybe lead), the real money, for the small change transactions. Have a hoard of either and you'll do just fine.
Palladium and Platinum are less recognizable. I think they look too much like SILVER and will not get you true value during the SHTF scenario. They are sort of extras for your hoards.
I'd stick with GOLD and SILVER for your store of wealth. Copper and/or nickle will be your spending money. |

| I even hold on to my clad quarters now, better than paper still. |

I used to do that as well, but now I'm turning my quarters and dimes in for pennies and nickels. You get more metal for less money. |

| I would like to call my little stash a hoard, but I know its not. Just a pile. I agree with the 1 ton copper and the 10 kilo gold. I think 2k silver is a good goal for anybody. But as stated on the forum by others, any PMs will help. I feel sorry for the masses... |

i hope no one here has a hoard of FRN's. i can see having a couple months or so expenses in cash just in case, but in my opinion 20,30, or 40 k should be put into coin or pm's if you want to hold it for a reserve.

Maybe if you sorted the FRN's and only kept the "star notes" or something. At least that way you have the numismatic value as well ;) |

That would not be him. It's Ken Griffey Jr., a baseball player. Picture is from a practical joke some team members played on him or something like that.

| Those numbers are a great place to start and I still have a way to go to reach the hoard level. |

Nope. That's only 1/3 of a ton. Gotta have a ton to qualify. |

I'm guessing Fogg lost a bet to Griffey...wonder if he'd let one of us sort those.
My grandfather used to bet on presidential elections with a buddy. He lost the bet in '76 and got a bucket of elephant dung at the circus and using gloves mixed in $50 worth of pennies. He then wrapped it and shipped it over. |
