I'm wondering how you guys are storing yours. And a quick question, i'm currently storing my relatively small hoard in plastic and paper cups, and the cardboard boxes i receive my pennies in. Do they cause PVC? And same with the paper rolls bank gives you to turn in coins, do they cause PVC as well? PVC covered coins are basically dumps for me regardless whether they are copper or not. And i don't want my entire hoard to become green.

| i store mine in the boxes they come in. you can get 2500 loose to fit if you put about half in - shake - put the other half in and shake around a little more. tape em up tight and they stack nicely. easy to store and easy to keep a total. |

| When I make pickups, I like to get $25 in CWR for every $75 Brinks or NF string rolls. Assuming a 25% copper take, I always have enough wrappers to re-roll the coppers and put back into a box they came in. I like doing this because I don't have to buy wrappers, and I use a free coin counter at the CU for dumps so it works out pretty good. |

I store mine in the bags they came in.. the original Mint bags. Each bag holds 300,000 coins. They would actually hold 400,000.. but I don't want to overfill them and make them too heavy. I also use kitty litter buckets for intermittant storage during processing. And since I am not as good at shaking as aloneibreak, I roll them up with the automatic rolling machines and store them in penny boxes.  |

| Mine get re-rolled and put in re-used Brinks boxes, then tape up the entire box with clear storage tape, label them, and six boxes fit nicely in a cat litter pail, which also stack up nice and neat. Very easy to store and move around in the future. |

Speaking from the experience of going through these old rolls I recently got to search. The coins haven't turned green from being in the wrappers, but there is definitely some sort of reaction between the paper and the coins. Not sure if today's coin wrappers would be the same, better, or worse for the long term storage/condition of the pennies. Try some research online at some of the coin sites.

| Like the other fellow, I store mine loose in Brinks box's. I weigh them so I have 15 pounds net weight in each box, seal them with tape, place 12 in Staples letter size paper boxes cut slightly down, so I can stack 2 high. The box hold 12 brinks boxes. I see no reason to roll copper that is being held as bullion. The boxes will not cause PVC damage. The sulfur in the paper may cause some toning, but likely they are already brown. The 5 gallon buckets and kitty litter containers sound great, but I have no access to them for free. I like free. |

I either roll or put in canvas bank bags. But, I think you might be under a misconception. It's probably safe to say that you have never gotten coins from a bank that have damage from PVC. All the green corrosion you see on cents is from other sources. |

| I kept them in the bank cardboard boxes until they got wet. Now I put them in Boxes and the boxes in sealed buckets, makes them realy heavy, or in jars and then in buckets. I figure if I need to move them very far I will need to crack open the buckets, but for now nondescript, but heavy buckets are a pretty safe bet. |

After sorting out for Cu I dump the coins into by CS-10 a handful at a time. The vast majority are what I call "Mixed Cdn Cu" but I hand pick out:
US Memorials (into a tin or bin)
US Wheats (another tin)
Cdn Kings and Doves (for further hand sorting)
I high speed count the coins into 2500 count Ziplock bags, mark the contents with a marker, and then store 6 bags in each Rubbermaid tote. This fills the totes I use and I am not interested in lifting more then 6X2500 coins at a time. When I get enough US Memorials or wheats set aside they also get counted into bags, labeled and stored the same way. I've not seen enough kings to fill a bag yet.
I am not at all concerned about storing inside a plastic bag. Only issue is you must be careful handling the bags as they can fall open/tear if roughly handled.
I tried storing nickels in glass juice jars but found four problems:
1. Hard to shake out
2. No count on them
3. I dropped and broke a jar - cutting myself up. It was very hard to separate the glass shards from the coins
4. The glass jars discolored some coins and molded the paper on one roll I dropped in. Seems the glass full of nickels condensed water into itself.

| I've stored mine in plain old plastic 1 gallon milk jugs, and it was a mistake. The plastic is too thin and after a year or so the pressure of the copper cents is causing the plastic to crack. I'm going to get some kitty litter buckets from now on. |

I havve tried a variety of storage methods, but recently have switched to 5 gallon plastic buckets which I purchase at Menards. They are inexpensive and a make very suitable, easy to store neatly, containers.
I realize that these buckets or similar ones (such as the cat litter buckets) can be obtained, often times, for free. But I am a 'small time' hand sorter and the bucket I am using seems to work very well. It will probably be a while before I need another 5 gallon bucket 
For the few special pennies (errors or semi key dates), I use cardboard flips and then store them in large zip lock bags. I don't think the pennies are going to be hurt.

| mine go into my barrel o pennies, however if a bucket is used then it seems that the hoard grows faster than if I just use the barrel. So bucket then the barrel o pennies. |

| Pennies are re-wrapped and in Brinks boxes; eventually the nickels will find their way to the same storage method, but for now they are in a plastic bin that is too heavy to pick up. |

| Once again, just when I think I have it figured out, something changes. As I mentioned above, I like Brinks boxes with 15 pounds net in them. But after a two day Crusade around the county, I have found 3 banks willing to sell me $50.00 bags and at least three places to dump Zincolns in coin sorters. It cost me $5.00 to join credit union, but I am a happy camper. The problem: If I buy $50.00 bags, I do not have Brinks boxes. So, I guess my next search will be for free 5 gallon buckets with lids. |

2old.. sounds like you are well ahead of most of us. I would love to get coins in bags and be able to dump in lobby counting machines. I could really crank up production if that was available to me. Unfortunately such is not available in my area, so I only get boxes.
The solution for you if you want to continue to store your copper loose in Brinks boxes is to vary your incoming mix. Just continue to pick up some raw coins in boxes in addition to your bags. Do your dumps at the counters and you will have plenty of boxes to store your coppers in.
Or you could roll the coppers up and put them in bank trays. I could give you a heck of a deal on some penny trays. |

I have just started saving pennies. I plan to sort and save 1000 per month for the next ten years. Thats a lot of pennies. Thats a lot of weight. Whatever I store them in will have to not burst from the weight of other pennies on top. Id like to store $1000 in one container but that will weigh 680 pounds. What kind of container can hold that much weight ? 20 gallon plastic barrels ? And if I accumulate many of these barrels, will it damage my basement foundation ? Its a cement slab but how much weight can I put on it before I have a problem ? Anyone have any helpful hints ? thanks

| Disc Jockey.. that's a lofty ambition. To put back that many you will need to sort a little over $1000 a week, depending on your copper percentage. Do your banks love you? The original Mint bags will hold $4000 face each and are stackable. You could spread the weight around to keep from damaging the foundation. How much you can safely store will depend on the thickness and reinforcement of the slab. You could consult with a structural engineer. |

HCBTT, I can get around $285-290 in a 5 Gal bucket. That is around 195 lbs. You have to do some shaking but if you are looking at long term storage and you don't plan on moving them, the more per bucket the better.
Disc Jockey, However you store them, spread the weight around like HCBTT said. You might want to use pallets. This will help spread the load out. You can put 4 55gal drums on 1 pallet. That will give you about 4 tons of pennies. |
