EDIT BY NICKELLESS: As a companion to this thread, also check out the thread "What did you prep today?": http://realcent.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~11965.asp

i convinced my sister to prepare for the next earthquake. THE BIG ONE! she has agreed. i told her that i was able to get water barrels cheaply through my hometown, as well as the water syphons. she agreed to buy one water syphon and two water barrels. she has also agreed to start stocking up. her husband is in agreement about getting prepared for an earthquake.

my sister and i both talked about something cataclysmic coming down the pipe later in life. we both agreed. swine flu, avian flu, THE BIG ONE!, and terrorist attacks.

my brother, on the other hand is not one to think about it. yet, his wife was in the air force for 20 years. when she got in the conversation, about preparing for the big one, she listened to how i was preparing uncondensed cans of soup so water would not be needed to drink the soup. so basically she listened to my speel about what i had done so far, pantry wise, to be ready for a quake.

i talked to my sister about getting water barrels for our parents. at first she thought that since they only lived 30 SECONDS away that they could just get water from them. but i convinced her that they needed their own barrels! it would be less of a burden on everyone that way. and BESIDES they would be pooling those water resources together, anyway. especially since her kids are watched there on occassion.

My husband. He is afraid he will not have food to eat. Finally, he is convienced that it is time to prepare and the first thing he wants to get is a generator. The list is getting longer but we are at least discussing it now.

A long distance friend via Instant messenger late last night. I told him what I have done. He asked why. We began an at length conversation and he committed without hesitation. He then asked all the details about what was stored, how much, how it was prepped and where to find the necessary space inside of a typical home. Interesting that the natural progression of the conversation led to his question "Have you made any consideration for home protection?" LOL!

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

That's great to hear, Jonflyfish. When you get a chance, ask him if he has any ideas on how to convince his family and others to start prepping.

yesterday at the parent committee i presented the disaster kits being put together at my dd's class. they were amazed at the amount of food that armour star has. i told them yes, for a child that's at least two servings. and what happens when you have to shelter at the school with your child? you will be sharing those meals, most likely. and these cans only cost $1.00 each and are made in America. they wre very happy. now it's up to them!

i'm inclined to go halfsies with my sister on a generator. one that we can afford now is simply $500.00 that will allow the fridge to run for a while and keep her diabetes meds cold.

the ladies at www.foodstoragemadeeasy.net are planning to give us hints and clues starting in january on how to convince others to prep.

after all is said and done, the easiest way to get someone to prep is to open their eyes to the LOCAL NATURAL DISASTERS. for us it's earthquakes. of course in the 90's it was earthquakes, floods, and fires!! and it didn't let up either.
