Hey All - found my first Indian Head last week (1906).

Another first today. I have a 1992-D with no copper coating. Are these common? Are they worth anything This is a AU sliver color penny.

Sorry the pictures are a little grainy. It is pretty shiny though.

Thanks

Win G

Congrats on your IHC find.

I found a 1998 D zinc without the copper coating. Local coin dealer paid $30.00 for it.

One key thing I learned was that if the uncoated coin is bright and shiny, it is likely a true mint error that can be worth some 'bucks'.

However, if the uncoated coin has a dull look to the surface it probably has been chemically treated to remove the copper coating.

I'm no expert, but I think this is accurate information.

I wonder how professional graders can tell the difference. It would be no trick to remove the copper then flash some bright zinc plate on it.

One give-away for that scenario is that most zinc cents, when struck, produce small bubbles between the copper and zinc layer. When the copper is removed, the bubbles are still visible on the zinc. This doesn't happen on an unplated cent.

Also the weight will be different on a true zinc cent compared to one that has had the copper removed then re-plated
