I'm sure everyone has seen one of the variants of these:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV5O_7hWJxM&feature=pyv&ad=3484272110&kw=restaurant (My favorite)
I know people around this forum have way more than $1,000 in cents and I would love to see someone actually try to buy a lot of stuff for cents at Office Max where they claim they will "take your pennies".
I haven't sorted in a while (new baby) so I actually don't have any unsorted that I didn't already take back to the bank but I'm tempted to sort out a couple hundred dollars in zinc and go shopping at Office Max.
If anyone else does this, please try to video or at least recap your experience.
The challenge: If anyone comes up with video of a successful attempt I will paypal you $100. (First one only). The first unsuccessful video attempt I will paypal you $10.
EDIT NOTE: You have to purchase something for at least $100 in cents to be eligible :)

| Do you want them to pay in loose pennys, rolls, or boxes or does it not matter? |

It doesn't matter how they pay as long as it is pure cents :)
I posted this here instead of the contest forum because
#1: It is open to non-members #2: Many people do not read the contest forum. #3: It is not technically a contest. It is a feat of skill that when performed nets you a payment. |

| By my reading of Public Law 89-81, Section 102, in the Coinage Act of 1965, they cannot legally refuse to accept US one cent coins as tender in payment of "all debts, public and private, public charges, taxes, duties, and dues." |

No, don't spoil the surprise! |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

AG.. the catch is that it applies to "debts." A purchase is not a debt. Now if you had an Office Max credit card and wanted to make a payment against your balance that would be something different.
The merchants can also put requirements on your penny payments to try to discourage large purchases with small coins. My local PG&E says they will accept payment in pennies, but they have a few requirements. The pennies must be rolled, and each roll must have your PG&E account number on it. Not really a problem for a guy with automatic coin rolling machines, a computer with a nice printer, and an automatic label peeling machine for mass mailings. |

"duties and dues" When you checkout, you payment is the amount 'due'. |

Try convincing a clerk at a gas station about that.. lol. My record for purchasing gas with pennies is $51. Deal has an even higher all penny transaction. He has a serious advantage though.. I have to prepay, and he pumps first and then tells them the pennies are the only money he has. |

Well, don't know about that, but the times I've paid tolls with pennies, I've pulled into an occupied booth, honestly, I don't see how they could refuse, I know you can't throw pennies in a basket, but you can hand them to an attendent, most roll thier eyes, one said thank you (she was a pretty girl too...lol ), some of the more stranger looks is when I've handed them a SBA Dollar, they think it's a quarter, and wait for more, until I tell 'em to READ the coin, it says "One Dollar" on it |

The "dues" clause might only be in relation to the preceeding word "public charges" - I'm not sure. I printed off a copy of the law. Imagine the look on a store manager's face if you whipped that out, with Lyndon Johnson's signature on it and everything, haha. |

Office Max will accept pennies. At least up to $1000. I asked. Check it out.
-----Original Message----- From: [*] Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 7:34 PM To: Online Customer Service Subject: Pennies
Sir or Ma'am, I am emailing you pertaining to the advertisments I've seen online. They claim that Office Max will accept pennies. Is this indeed true, or is it just a clever ploy? Can I expect to be able to spend a large amount, $1000 give or take, in one of your stores? Thank you for your prompt response. J.S.

I note that she did not actually answer your question, just asked that you notify them before hand. I can see it now:

Re: Crazy Penny Guy.
Customer J has threatened to come shopping with $1000 in pennies. Please do not waste your time counting all those coins. Just use the shipping scale in the back. If he does not like that, call the cops.

Do you think they prefer canvas or plastic.. bags? Firing up 6 counting machines to fill bags and 3 rolling machines to fill boxes with rolls. Hope they have some good stuff on sale. |
