I searched the forum under both Souvenir and Elongated and could not find this topic.
What are your opinions about using copper cents in making elongated souvenir cents?
Before I "wised-up" about the zincs, all my and my kids' elongated cents were zincs. We recently took a trip to Las Vegas and brought a supply of coppers for this purpose.
On their website (below) it says "Serious collectors will use pennies minted prior to 1982 because after 1982 the mint began to use a percentage of 99.2% zinc with a 0.8% copper - coating."
I figured the copper cent souvenirs would last longer, look better and be more valuable. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

| No doubt copper is better...Got two at Gettysburg this year and just happened to have a zinc and an LMC in my pocket...The zinc came out looking exactly like that- zinc! |

I was in NY recently and was at Orange County Choppers and I pressed a zinc and a copper. The copper still shows evidence of being a penny on both sides. The zinc does not. |

My son collects elongated cents and is a junior member of The Elongated Collectors.

It's true, collectors of elongated cents (smashed pennies) prefer to use copper cents, since the design can be stamped more deeply. Some collectors also like to press on wheat cents.
(If your kids would like to join TEC, it's only $5 per year per member. When TEC mails out the quarterly newsletter, the club always includes 3 or 4 pressed pennies.) |

| I didn't read any of the articles posted, but copper is so much better based on my recent trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. We picked up a small handful of these, and the zinc ones look like junk. You can see the whitish metal coming through on those, while the copper ones look and feel solid. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

| My daughter and I collect 'Smashed Pennies' and have a couple of little booklets full. The 'Creme de la creme' of the collection is two from the 1939 World's Fair that my dad got as a kid. We always try to use coppers for this as the zinc's look like crap when pressed. |

| I find both zinc and copper and I hate them (about 30 so far)... They jam my Ryedale real bad, have to pull all the coins out (3 hoppers deep) and remove wheel |
