I dont have the time to weigh every one. So, should I get bulk, and then sell them for over face, or should I just throw them back into the wild?

I find that about 3/4 are copper. I think that it is worth your time to weigh them

Agreed, sort the 82's and keep the coppers, you'll be surprised how many are Cu, and every little bit adds up.

I don't have a scale yet, so I just put mine in a Zip-Lock bag for when I do.

Separate them and when you have 10-15 minutes of spare time, do the "ring" test on them. You can go through a lot of them in a short amount of time using this method. As the others have already mentioned, a substantial amount of 1982s are copper.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of it's victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busy-bodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

I used to just throw them all back in with the zincs. Then I got smart, and realized that 2-4% of all my pennies sorted were 1982's, and many of those were copper. So I started saving them. I used to do the ring test, and I liked it. But thanks to Mr. Bong, I now have a nice digital scale which does that job a whole lot faster.

I personally would save and sort. Like Corsair said, there are a lot of them in circulation and 75-80% of them are Cu.

If you don't want to do the ring test. Build a simple balance scale from whatever you have around the house. I have and can broom through them in no time.

I use an old balance I got in Ghana. It's really old and unbelievably sensitive, as it's original purpose was measuring gold dust. I take a pre-82 penny on one pan and it takes about a second to test each '82.

I'll buy bulk 82's for 1.25x face including shipping also, so you can just sell them for a small profit instead of re-wilding them.

If you don't have time to weigh them throw them back into circulation. If you throw them in a jar you'll wind up with hundred's and really not have time to fool with them. If you put them back into circulation they'll eventually find a good home.

If you have time to hand sort, and have time to seperate them, you have time to weigh them or flip them. It really goes faster than you might think.

After a while I have found I can either hear or feel the wt of the coppers to tell. I know they are not exactly right, but it is better than sending them back to resort next time.
