There was a box of 1000 mixed date wheat cents for $30. The cents looked all harshly cleaned, but otherwise didn't seem to have other problems that I could tell (it was inside a case so I couldn't look at them up close). Would anyone here have jumped on them? I thought about it, but ended up passing.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Heck wheats for 3cents each. But add taxes, might've ended up costing more.

I have so many ugly wheats already. I just wonder if anyone would be willing to pay more than 3 cents each for them if I decided to sell down the road. I know people here look for 4 cents each roughly delivered on average circulated wheats, but these are a lower grade than that.

You can get 4 cents each any time day or night so 3 cents is a must-buy regardless of condition.

Plus: There is no such thing as ENOUGH!

I would have purchased them because you could always get 3 cents for them later, and on the off chance ( you know those unsearched pennies ) there would have been any key dates in the bunch they would bring big money no matter what shape they are in.

If I had the extra cash in hand probably.

No, once they are cleaned they are pretty much just have their copper value.

I think all the key dates in this lot were probably taken out as the dealer had other better coins in his case. So my thinking in not taking them was basically what jtm3 said. There's always the chance that some good dates slipped in there, but I wasn't ready to take the chance. These had that weird pinkish brown color that some harsh cleaners use. They were truly ugly coins.

Pinkish brown is probably from acetic acid or a long time in vinegar...

I've used acetic acid to pretty up the ugliest green cruddy LMC's... They are still ugly, but better then they were...

hey, three cents each just for their copper value isn't bad for a long term investment.

For the fun and chance of finding something, maybe, sure.

But tax would have been a factor.

Will buy any quantity of .999 Canadian Nickels at current spot - shipped (US Address).

I'd have passed. If they were cleaned and he was selling better dates separately, they were probably all junk. Better off buying copper LMCs for half the price.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

If a dealer is selling cleaned Wheats (a REAL BIG NO! NO!), I wouldn't give more than melt value.
It's got to be well looked over, I truly doubt you would find any key dates.

I agree. Even though they are copper, i doubt that you would have found any 'hidden treasures' among them ... probably a lot more people then we realize are sorting through wheats for those desirable dates and conditions ... IMHO

Ok good...sounds like my gut instinct to pass on these was probably the right move. If it had been 1000 normal average circulated wheats I would be sorting through them now and would have asked the lady at the counter for the dealer's contact info.

Today, one of my office colleagues just brought me 93 wheats that she said she'd been collecting and was tired of just having them sit in a jar on her window.
When I asked how much she wanted for them, she looked puzzled and said, "A penny?".
I gave her a FRN, told her to bring in any and all she finds and to keep the change.
All '40's and '50's (no doubled '55's) but hey, they're Wheats at face!
