Any of you ever scrap aluminum cylinder heads? I'm a mechanic and have a few stacked up. I have removed all the valves and fasteners from them, it was easy enough for me to do. I was just wondering about the bronze valve guides that are pressed in them. Right now clean aluminum is about 50 cents a pound, dirty probably about 12 cents. I don't think they would consider them clean with the guides in but I could be wrong... Any ideas here? I guess you can heat the heads in an oven and knock the guides out I'm just not sure if it would be worth it. Thanks!

I can't say for sure what your yard will do, but at the one I go to I usually get the clean price if the only non clean metal is worth more than the main piece. I would likely get clean aluminum price for what you mentioned. Could always ask when you take something else in. I've also found that the guy on the scale and the girl in the office see things a bit differently, so sometimes it's better to speak in person!

Are you throwing that out?

I took in my cylinder heads and some miscellanous aluminum items and was paid clean price for them, even though there were some magnetic pieces left in there. I had a few hundred pounds so I guess the guy on the scale figured it was good enough...

Sometimes it depends on the yard or rather the yard man doing the receviving. 1 guy may give general price for say aluminum siding, but the next give a better price because it is paint free (Had 1 owner do this but next time was given just clean price for same stuff to the same guy. Musta been a good day/bad day thing.) Some will complain about this or that or get exstremely picky about things like paint/glue/tar etc. Some don't.
Best thing that you can do is see what the yard gives you on a certain day. If you are told something you don't like haul your stuff off. Tell em you'll take it home and clean it better or whatnot and see if another yard around will give you a better deal or brake. Its sometimes touch and go with many yards.
