I picked up a batch of halves at the bank a couple days ago, and while I didn't find even a single 40%, this one caught my eye:

Notice that there is almost no relief on the left and right sides of the front of the coin--the "LI" and "TY" in LIBERTY and the I and part of the N and part of the S and all of the last T in "IN GOD WE TRUST" appear to not have been stamped. The reverse side of the coin looks uniform in its relief. I can't say I've ever seen anything like this personally. Any idea what this might be worth if in fact it is a true understrike?

Your half is a strike through grease error. Grease was trapped between the die and the planchet causing a weak strike lack of detail in the weak areas. This is a common error.

I just had a guy on GIM offer me $1 face in pre-1965 silver for this half. I'm taking him up on it.

That's a struck through alright.
