What is the current going rate of $100 FV of 59-81 US copper cents (a 68lb. flat-rate box)?

(I hope this thread stays active over time so it can be a sort of price index for the penny market - like an informal "Grey Sheet" of copper pennies.)

Individual copper value:

10/16/09 - $0.0185
10/23/09 - $0.0__
10/30/09 - $0.0__

EDIT: See the posts below - I have named this the Copper Penny Price Index (CPPI). I hope to track, with the input of Realcent members, the market price of a $100FV lot of US copper pennies. Eventually, this could expand to other size lots, but this is clearly the preferred size at the moment due to USPS flat rate boxes.

Good idea. May I suggest a table with the following columns:

DATE, BULLION VALUE, GOING RATE

In each case distill down to price per coin so it is easy to compare.

That way people could see the rate of change in the bullion value vs. the "real life value".

Good suggestion.

Finding the "going rate" is the hard part, so hopefully the big sellers will post some numbers for us.

We can call this the CPPI: Copper Penny Price Index

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

Looking through the "Buy it now", "completed sales", and E-bay, the data for the United States' CPPI, for the week of October 12-16th 2009, is:

Avg. Bid: $135 - Avg. Ask: $140, High: $168 - Low: $130
(Cu Bullion Value: $191.21)

I don't have a formula or a wide enough sample to distill that into a single CPPI number yet.

And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel / For nothyng is better than lyberte / For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world.

It will be nice to get closer to the bullion value, compared to what a person have to leave on the table to made a sale now.

Is the price going to include shipping? Where all are you pulling numbers from?

I don't if shipping should be factored in or not, but most of the prices I found either included shipping or were pick-up only. Right now I'm just looking at sales on this forum and ebay. Hopefully people will post numbers from deals they are in so it can be more accurate.

Here is the lowest price I found: http://realcent.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~11641.asp
Highest price: http://cgi.ebay.com/100-Face-Value-Of-95-Copper-Pennies-1959-1981_W0QQitemZ130335902396QQcategoryZ166678QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3907.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D12%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D54

Great idea. I had thought about this, but just don't have the time to track it all.

Oh man.. that guy with highest prices is in my hoarding area. He lives in the same town as one of my pickup banks.. lol. I think he has been in the game a long time.. I recognize the seller name. I don't think you can count that one, since there are no completed sales at that price. You could maybe use it as an "ask" price.

Would like to see seperate categories for direct deals versus eBay deals. With ebay deals you have to factor in the eBay and PayPal fees paid by the seller.

Hopefully you can either add or subract shipping to make all deals comparable. Shipping is a big factor.. adding at least .1x to the price.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

Great idea- I would add that, the $50 face value lot is very popular on eBay and would provide a straightforward additional source of sales data.

Is the next step the formation of the "Realcent Copper Reserve, LLC"?
"We've" got to have hold/control of some kind of a market force in Cu at this point.
There's going to be some lucre involved once the melt ban is lifted!

I'm going to be an avid fan of the CPPI, it's a good idea.

There's profit if you melt things!!
