Hi everyone!
First i want to sincerely thank all the posters for sharing information, and opinions. I've been reading this site for a few weeks now and have gleaned a lot of valuable knowledge.
I started collecting pennies after noticing the value on coinflation.com (im a silver bug, and check that site regularly to see what fair value is before bidding on ebay). From there i raided my nephews penny jar, (he was delighted when i gave him paper money...i'll let him in on it when he's a bit older), and when that wasn't enough i got my first box.
and it was a sweet box. 9 wheats, one dime, 48% copper (im in southern ontario...we had copper til 1996) AND a beautiful 1936 george V. it was an inspiring box, so i got 8 more. tried to spread it around, but scotia practically banned me (wanted to charge me 12 cents per roll!!!) and i cant get bags anywhere that i know of. so im stuck with boxes, but hooked nonetheless.
and in case you are wondering about my name... its my website, but i haven't started it yet. stay tuned!

Hi Metalmoney - Welcome to the group! Yes there is a lot of good & interesting information to be found here. Good score on the 1936 George V. It really surprises me that they can still be found in circulation over 70 years later! Going through the pennies looking for the good ones is very soothing although it will make your eyes go buggy. Your average of 40% copper tells me that somebody else in your area is also saving copper. Depending on which of the big banks that I go to the copper also varies from 60% to 40%. With the average being low from my main bank, I will try to get more pennys from the other banks in different areas whenever possible. Welcome again & happy hunting!! Best regards, Bart |
Nice. Yes. Very nice. |

With all this talk about high copper finds in Canada, I'm really getting tempted to make a trek like Cessna does. Too bad i'm about 5 hours away from the border. Travel costs would make quite a dent in the profit... Still tempted though.
Welcome!

Hm...glad you are in Canada, no need to take copper out of circulation from your southern friends, right? Welcome to Realcent. This is a great place and has grown to become my favorite site on the web (well, besides Google). |

jadedragon: the bank that wanted to charge me per roll also said they would charge it as a handling fee for returning wrapped rolls as well. I thought this was nuts, so i called customer service and complained. They called the bank themselves while i was on the phone and while they had never heard of this policy, told me that i could talk to the branch manager and "work something out." since there are 4 banks on every main corner it seems it's not worth it. I plan to dump at the banks with automatic coin counters, but this branch will hold a special place in my gut that swims with spite. I was thinking of returning my oily/nasty/corroded pennies to them. Or since i have a visa card with them should i just make hourly payments of 3 or 4 cents? I don't want to bring negativity on here but 12 cents per roll really cheesed me off.
Gr33nday43: I want your nickels, not pennies! we get a large amount of American pennies up here, I'm sure way more than you find of Canadian pennies. I was in new york a couple months ago, and someone wouldn't take our pennies. I know it's not legal tender...but i was so used to accepting American pennies, nickels, and dimes that i was surprised.
found my first plastic penny today!!! weird. |

| Welcome to the forum, I'm from Ontario as well (Toronto). Do you have an account with Scotiabank as well or just the Visa? Either way that's pretty poor service, I would think about closing the accounts or at least transferring them to another branch and letting them know why. Dimes and nickels are fun to sort too, nickels not as much as a couple years ago but there's still old stuff to be found. If you know of multiple banks with coin counters you could buy bags from one and dump at another. |

Hi psi, thanks for the welcome.
I just have the visa with scotia, and its a good card so i'll keep it. The poor service started when i asked if they could order me a couple boxes per week. I realize now that was a mistake, because they were friendly when i wanted 1 or 2 boxes just walking in. I can only assume that they thought i would be a hassle, or i would dump them back there(i assured them i wouldn't bring them back) or they didnt want to order them and then i not show up. (CIBC was adamant that i show up before 3pm or they would ship them back...guess they have a tiny vault)
I thought about buying bags at one and dumping at another, but i think i'll wait until i get a ryedale. plus i would hate to open up a huge bag of zinc.
Are you talking silver dimes and nickel/cupronickel nickels? i've even thought of saving dimes/quarters up until 1999. you would need nickel prices around $22/lb to have the metal value match the face value...but that might have to wait until we get <10% pull rates on our pennies :) |

| For a while I was keeping the 82-99 nickels and 68-99 dimes/quarters, but I decided it wasn't worth keeping the money tied up so I ended up returning them. I do think that original mint rolls of those coins may be a good numismatic play as the mint continues to pull nickel/cupronickel out of circulation and melt it. With dimes I average about one silver per $100 sorted, not a huge payout for the time it takes but there's always the chance you hit the jackpot. I also pull American dimes and other coins out of habit although it looks like we may hit par again before long. |
