How does everyone feel about using a grinding stone on the side of the 1982 pennies to see what it is? If it is being keep just for the copper content I don't see where it matters. When i have a penny that i can't tell what the date is I grind the side of it on a sharping stone to see what is inside. Zinc goes in the junk box, copper in with the rest. I have so many cruddy, chewed up, ate up, beat up, bent, cut, glued, warped, mangled ,corroded ,chewing gum crusted, jelly coated, syrup soaked pennies now i don't know what to do with them. I think I am going to take them to the bank and dump them on the counter. They are rejected from the coin machines. So I figure time to trade them in.

| The junkers you have that won't pass the counter, you can roll and take in somewhere. As far as the grinding, it is really worth the time and effort even if it is a copper? - I just junk mine. When percentages are lower, I may certainly change that, but for now, to the junk pile. |

| Why not purchase a cheap scale for about $7 on ebay (inclues shipping). .31 grams = copper, .25 = zinc. |

i agree with pensil Just drop a zinc penny and it sounds like a thud... Drop a copper one and it will have a ringing noise...When you handle enough cents you will almost beable to tell by looking at it and holding it... For the hardcore numismatics i would agree with dp2007 and get a scale... Just dont grind it |

Drop them or flip them, you'll hear the difference. Grinding a coin is just the wrong thing to do, you'll lose come Cu! |

| If I can't tell the date, it's junked. I'm not going to waste my time trying to pick off whatever is on there or seeing what metal is on the inside. |
Am I a good person doing bad things? Or a bad person doing good things? |

| If theres a little bit of gunk on what I think might be a copper I use a known zincoln and try to scrape whatever it is off. Not too much time though. But if it is very corroded and the date is not readable.....junk. |

| Ok so what does everyone do with their "junk" coins? At work my manager opens the coinstar for me and dumps the "trash" bin in my hand. Some are bent, cut, or deformed in such a way that I can't dump them with my zinc's. These are the ones I do a quick check to get the coppers. I am going to take what I have( bent pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters) to my bank to trade them for good pennies. |

Take a wooden mallet to the bent coins, it'll flatten them out nicely. You can use a plain old hammer if you take it easy. Squashing them flat in a vise also works. I find they spend just fine. I don't have any trouble spending cut or drilled coins either. Well, I do have one half of a cut in half zinker that nobody will take. |

The only way you can get rid of some of them is to take them to a bank branch that returns damaged coin and currency to the fed. You can do so yourself but shipping gets expensive. I suppose if you had enough free damaged pennies to fill a flat rate box it would be worth your time.

| Sometimes when I buy rolls from the bank you can clearly see that they put all the junk cents in this roll that they could not have otherwise passed off in a machine or transaction. So you could mix some good centrs with these and return them as so. |

Experts on this forum will be able to give a much better answer then me, however, it is my understanding that there seven (?) different varieties of the 1982 Lincoln. Copper P & D, Zinc P & D, and some 'small date' or 'large date' varieties.
I hand sort and find a large number of 1982s. I throw the 'gunked up' ones and those with corrosion, or battered in the 'return' bag. Thankfully I haven't had any problem with the coin sorter I use at the bank rejecting any of these 'icky' ones.
The rest, including the BUs, I put into rolls of 1982 mixed copper/zinc P&Ds. I have a lot of these rolls and the pile is growing. I kind of think that the big majority of them are copper. It seems to me that there is a noticable difference in feel and look between the 82 coppers and zinkers. But, being new at this, I easily could be wrong.
Don't know if its going to be worth hanging on to the large and growing number of rolls of mixed 82s I have. Don't know if anyone buys such a thing so they may just go back to the bank to get cash to buy more penny rolls.

Bounce a pre 82 and an post 82, listen to the difference. I do this on a wood table (sounds the best for me) Bounce them both back and forth for a few minutes, it will be engrained in your head and will never have a problem telling the difference again..

| I have a digital scale ($10 on ebay) that is great for 82's or unreadable dates. Spend the cash for a digital scale. Its a must have if you are sorting. It comes in handy for weighing other coins, scrap, bullion, etc. |

The only scale I have is a 1955 Mailing scale. Not very acurate at gram weights. |

Hey Planner, There are both Cu and Zn varieties of the 1982-D Lg Date. However, all 1982-D Sm Dates are Zinc. Cheers,
