Thought I would start a new thread for people to post any neat/exciting finds they get from those Give a Penny/Take a Penny trays. I apologize in advance if a similar thread has already been started.

Here's mine from this morning at a BP gas station/convenience store --

Walked in with my usual small handful of Zincolns to exchange...sitting right on top was a wheatie and an '09 logsplitter (LP2). Grabbed both of them. Expected it to be the usual '56D or '58D but when I got home I found it to be a 1939S in really nice condition. Certainly not a key date, but mintage on the '39S is still a relatively low ~52MM.

Take care,

Jeff

I found three coppers from those trays down in Branson. And the only moth I know if is the Death's Head moth, from The Silence of the Lambs. Scary-looking thing.

Am I a good person doing bad things? Or a bad person doing good things?

I got a '43P War Nickle from an ARCO tray last month.
I got a 99% Canuk-A-Nickle in Feb from the same ARCO.
Last year I scored a '62 Dime from a tray while I was traveling thru Idaho to Montana.
I'm just under 3 rolls of Cu for this month.

I wonder if it was one of yours that I found last September searching a roll here in Central Florida. I know that it certainly gave me peace during my husband's lengthy hospitalization and recuperation that began just days after I found that coin.

Thanks for that thoughtful project, whether or not it was yours I found.

Reviving my old thread...

My dad got in the act this morning and found a 1929-S wheat in the GAP/TAP tray at a Pick-N-Save grocery store. Would have been a real nice coin too except that it has a small rim nick...too bad. I see that mintage on that one is a relatively low ~50.15 MM. He was proud of his find and woke me up to tell me about it!!!

Anyone else come up w/ any interesting finds from these trays recently?

Take care,

Jeff

This qustion will show how 'dumb' I am concerning penny collecting/hoarding. Please tell me what is a GAP/TAP tray? Sorry for asking a stupid question

Recently picked up several rolls from different banks and have been hitting about 45 - 50% coppers, plus several early 70s that are beautiful BU condition. this suddenly got really fun

Thanks very much for your gracious answer, MichaelOnion. Had I more carefully read the first post (Cecropia-Moth), I would have had my answer before I asked my question . In any case, happy hunting and good sucess to all those who look through the GAP/TAP trays .

1936P from a Chevron station tray Friday 10/2/09.
I've stopped counting how much Cu I've picked out for free.
It's probably over $5, one free penny at a time, so far this year.

Found a quarter today in at a BP in Chicago, I just took it along with a 1972 penny left the other five cents in there. The clerk seemed oblivious. Then I wondered, was that moral? And more importantly who would leave a quarter in there anyway?

I'm not so sure scooping everything, every time, is immoral. After all the person who left it was essentially giving it to whoever needed it.

I decided to do an experiment and start scooping all of them. I won't hide my actions from the clerk. I will make sure he/she sees. Then just note the reactions in a notebook. Of course if a clerk reacts strongly I'll just put them back (after grabbing/replacing the copper, of course)

This should be fun. I used to do experiments like this a lot in college (psych). One of my favorites was the elevator experiment. Get in a crowded elevator in a high rise, stand at the back of the elevator facing the wall (not the door). Have a friend (confederate) note the reactions of the people.

not unlike spending 60-80 half dollar coins for a fillup

Cool...let us know how it turns out.

My dad had another small find from that same Pick-N-Save that yielded the 29-S wheat a few weeks back...a couple days ago he came away with a '67 Canadian rockdove 1-cent.

I find that these trays around here (SE Wisconsin) often yield Canadians. A good explanation would probably be that most people either do not want them or don't know what they are, so they just chuck 'em. I especially like finding the pre-1980 Canadian cents (98% and 3.24 grams vs. our 95% and 3.11 grams). Those coins are little chunkers.

I wonder if any members in South Florida for instance find Caribbean coins or members in South Texas/Arizona/etc. find Mexican coins in these trays at a high(er) rate than in other areas of the country???

Take care,

Jeff
