I've been saving my zincs and have a few hundred dollars. I'm going to start exchanging them soon.

From personal experience, when do bank tellers give you a dirty look or get mad in general?

$10 in zinc?
$25 in zinc?
$100 in zinc?
Other amount?

And how often do you return this amount without receivig bad vibes?

It varies branch to branch. Shop around and ask them. Some branches LOVE to get rolls in, others equally HATE the.

Credit unions are usually good bets though.

The bank(s) I dump at loves my (handwrapped) rolls.

But they dont have a coin counter so I am forced to wrap my own.

So $50 dollars wrapped won't make them too mad?

Seems like the tellers get mad anytime you ask about coins, much less bring any in. It's really kind of shocking, customer service is their job. Some of them are just plain bitchy, demanding to know if you have an account that, what do you need them for, blah blah blah.

They can do this because they are a private business and the gov can not dictateto them how to conduct their business affairs.

Unless your GM then the pres can fire the CEO.

I hear you Kurr, but money is money. And banks are in the customer service business. There's just no excuse for grouchy tellers. I dont' think asking for a few rolls of coins is that much to ask. I don't do it on a regular basis. All they have to do is say 'sorry, we have a policy against that'. Instead they get all crabby and act like their day is ruined by the mere request.

I guess in fairness i should add that some tellers are helpful and friendly about it, but i'd say 3/4 cop a 'tude.

For zinc returns:

1) Dress business-like. Shirt and tie will work.
2) Have large amount of money in dump bank account
3) Try to make your dump small enough so you only make one trip to your vehecile.
4) Dump on days prior to the cash truck coming.
5) If possible, make deposit rather than receiving cash.
6) Make no facial expressions that would make it seem that your dump is odd. Look normal.
7) Purchase roses for tellers (gals and guys)

This should work for about 3 months then you will either have to start paying for your own bags, paying for coins being processed, or be told to stop altogether.

Since I hand-sort, I don't take back large quantities ... the most probably would be around $50. But I only go to one of two banks I know of where I live that have 'customer operated' coin sorters. Those who have an account can 'dump' free as often as they wish. Those who do not have an account have to pay a small percentage of the final value of the dump.

Of course, I have an account and the tellers are always very nice and friendly. I don't know what they would be like if I brought several bags or boxes worth of pennies in at one time

When you start bringing in your dumps with a cart or hand truck, start thinking " Today is the day they cut me off."

I try to go in no earlier than 1 hour after they open. Let them get settled in for the day. Never at lunch or after 4.

Sometimes on Friday morning( rarely ), but never Friday after lunch...its payday.

Ask when they are changing bags if they mind X amount of pennies. I usually tell them when they change the bags what I have. It is not hard to guess if you are a seasoned sorter.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

No more than $1000 per branch at a time. No more bad vibes, my primary dump is used to me and my credit unions accept them as well without a problem.

I have 2 banks i'm becoming familiar with and dumping at least $300 at each bank. I may return multiple times over the week but i try to stay under $400 at any one bank dump, because the bags fill up at $50.
I like your attitude Slick, "today is the day they cut me off". So true...
I've had a lot of success by speaking openly with the managers and bank staff that open your accounts. If they are okay with you returning, "as many coins as you like" then you should be pretty safe for at least a little while.
Being friendly and polite is by far the easiest way to have your choice of banks remain your choice banks.
I'm not as bigtime as Slick or Notabigdeal, but picking up and returning $1K a week can be very bothersome to the tellers. we are at their mercy, but I have to say the majority of banks I work with will be open to our odd hobby.

When you take in zincs.. ByTheTon!

Never haul in a cart with a squeeky wheel piled high with bags of zincs on a daily basis.

Never take in 2300 rolls of zinc to a single bank for 1 dump.

Spread your dumps around. Some banks are actually happy to get rolled coin. I have some of my dump banks practically begging me to bring in boxes of pennies. Seems they never order enough for their merchant customers. Other dump banks tell me they really like my machine rolled zincs.. they are the only rolls they trust. I don't use one of my carts for dumps now. I limit dumps at a single bank to what I can carry in in a couple of bags.. usually 6-8 boxes.

Act like it's the most natural thing in the world to deposit a few boxes of pennies. Start off with just a box or 2 to guage which banks are friendlier about receiving a few pennies. Neatly rolled in full boxes is usually the way they prefer it. Try to avoid busy times like Fridays and the day the government checks go out. By bringing in your business to the bank when things are really slow, you are helping the tellers to keep getting their hours and avoiding notice when the line gets backed up.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

I took $25 in to one branch and she was giving me the 5th degree about how I got so many pennies. She then stood there and felt each roll to make sure I didn't short them or stick something else in there. She then said one of the rolls looked strange but then decided it was not that strange looking after feeling it. I almost fealt like she was treating me like I was a criminal. I am starting to learn that I get treated better if I am dressed up. If I return pennies during the week and I am in dress pants and a dress shirt I get treated better than if I turn in pennies on the weekend and I am in shorts and a tshirt and a baseball cap.
