I've gotten all geeked up on nickels thanks to PennySaved.
Since he posted a few weeks ago about getting into nickels, I followed getting into it as well. So far, 3 war nickels and a couple hundred pre-'60s. No buffs yet, but a teasing 5 '38-'39's.
Today, while dumping halves, I bought my first bag of any kind. I'm a box guy.
It was loaded with dimes and foreign coins- very fun departure from halves.
6 different countries including an AU 1949-F 50 Pfennig from Germany. I googled it to see if it was silver (it isn't) and found it was part of the "currency reform" from post-war Germany. Everywhere I saw them for sale, they had it from $65-$85!
AGressive Metal-please weigh in, you seem to be the resident foreign coin expert.
Is this really that great of a coin or am i missing something?

I have got to find a source for loose bagged coin. All these awesome stories of dimes and stuff being found in them.

My theory on why random stuff gets into the wrong bag:
I have been studying the bag switchout closely. The ends of the bags are gapped open and I've seen coins littered on the floor of the machine. I think as the bags fill, they squeeze the ends closer together and perhaps coins that are supposed to go in bounce off the ends into the next bag. They are crammed in there so tight next to each other. This explains how a dime could get into a nickel bag, but I don't get how the foreigns get in there. 14 foreign coins in this bag today- generally nickel sized- but some weights seem way off from a US Nickel. My main dump bank uses an ultra-fast Cummins sorter-never anything in the reject tray...how are these coins getting through? |

What kind of bags? Coin counting machine bags? From the machine?
Cloth bank bags?
Please explain. I have never seen/found a source for these.

Coin-machine bags...I never even thought to ask if I could buy these until yesterday!
They will only sell them full though. I dump so many halves that they have to change the bags at least 2-3 times and they cycle through the LED screen for each denom. There is a button for each coin they push to see what's full. I'm gonna start taking "feeder" coins so if the nickel or dime bags are close to full...I'll fill them and buy! Nickels-$200, dimes-$1000 until full. |

| I wasn't aware of any of the reform coinage being worth much, as its just the equivalent of post-64 circulation coins for us, but I looked up that particular coin and its book value is 50 cents in VF, 3.00 in XF, and 35.00 in Unc. Now keep in mind that means true uncirculated, as in no trace of wear. They made a 1949 F proof as well which books for over $100, so maybe that is the coin you are seeing advertised. Rarely do foreign coins sell for full book in the USA. |

| One of my banks is willing to swap $25 in loose bagged coin that I bring in for the counted coins that other customers bring, but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet. I never thought about just offering to buy it. |

Banks or credit unions who receive loose coins, that is the first question you may want to ask, do you accept loose coins? If so, ask if you can buy their bags and save them processing fees. Then they will likely scurry around kooking like a deer in the headlights until they find a head teller to answer. If they ask if I am a customer, I always answer YES! If they will sell bags, ask which day they ship them out. Try to show up the day before. Right now I have 4 who will sell me bags. Last week someone got there before me and bought the only bag at one of my pickups. Kinda like hunting, stalking, the hunt is as much fun as the find.
I am going to get snap lock holders that will hold 4 pennies and give a set of shiny Zinolcn commemoratives to my tellers who co-operated. Good will should cost about $.40. |

| Bags are good unless you have other coin searchers dumping their rejects in your coin bags. I am experiencing this right now. I buy all the bags and am guaranteed at least one skunk because this person fills up more than one bag at a time. |

I stick with boxes because that's all I can seem to find.
No problem though. Found all the key date nickels and find plenty of buffaloes and wars to keep me happy. |
