You think it can't happen to you. But then it does. I got a call today from my supply bank telling me not to bother coming tomorrow to get my weekly order. They said they heard from the bean counters at headquarters and they told them them they could no longer order pennies for me. I don't know what changed. I have been getting an order of several hundred dollars each week for a year and a half. If I take sealed bags that come in from other banks I would think if would actually save them money. They don't have to open the bags and run them through a rolling machine and have the expense of the paper and boxes. Plus the armored car service stops at this branch every Thursday anyway it's not like they have to make a special trip. They said if I wanted to continue with the order it would cost me. They said $2.50 a bag. That's 5 percent I am not going to pay that.

So now I am back to square one. I need to find a new supply bank. Or spend more time going from bank to bank getting a bag here and a bag there. It was just so nice making one stop and picking up all my pennies in bags. No breaking open rolls. I guess I should look at the bright side. I still have my dump banks with the self serve coin counters which are probably harder to find then supply banks. And I have about as much copper piled up as I want. So my copper sorting will probably slow up now and I will concentrate more now on increasing my silver pile.

That sucks. I guess it's time for you to go bank shopping again. At least you still have your dump banks. Good luck on your search.

Try to look at the bright side.
Not only do you have your old dump banks, you have a new one.

I'll probably take a little time off. I'll be busy with the harvest for the next 3 months anyway. I was getting a little burnt out so some time off probably won't hurt. After harvest when the snow starts flying and there isn't much else to do in North Dakota but sort pennies, I will have to find a new supply bank.

NDFARMER:

Since you are a farmer then you are likely a GOOD bank customer with loans and larger than average deposits, etc.

You should have no problem pulling a little weight with the branch manager to get your problem solved.

That is assuming this is one of your banks that you have a loan and deposits with.

From reading other "I got cut off" stories it seems that if you are a good customer other than the "pennies" you can usually get back your privileges if you threaten (nicely) to move on to another bank and speak with the manager.

Three months is a long time in the life of any bank employee in relation to there duties. If you take the summer off, a lot can change. If you aren't already, you should be doing this under a farm or commercial account (as someone already said) because what you are doing would be well under the radar in a commercial account. A different name or variation of a name on a new account may be all it takes to throw the scent off of your trail for a while. The fact that you have a "friendly" teller, or branch manager means a lot. I've been in and out of banks as a salesman for 20 years. I have had many commercial accounts through the years and probably have at least five active commercial accounts in about that many banks. Everything is negotiable............ Everything. I have many great memories of harvest as a high school kid working for a custom harvester for three or four summers. Only made it to ND sneaking across the state line when a farmer had land in ND and SD.
If you like sorting pennies don't give up. (Except for the summer)

All good things must end. BUMMER! Now you have to work for them like the rest of us here. There are many helpful hints in these pages about sourcing pennies, in case you have forgotten how. You get to enjoy the thrill of the hunt again!

If I could count the # of banks that have cut me off.. lol. This is why you have to maintain several source banks. Heck, in 3 months that bank will probably have a new name on the door and you can start all over.

Many banks are doing this. They are looking really closely at all costs and for any potential revenue sources. Even if you save them money, they might be looking at it from the standpoint that there is no profit in the transaction for them and it takes teller time to service the deal.

Now you have 1 more dump bank too.. even if you have to roll them up with your machine to deposit them.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Let me see if I understand this? If you cross the North Korean border illegally, you get 12 years hard labor; the Iranian border illegally you are detained indefinitely. If you cross the US border illegally, you get a driver’s license, a social security card, welfare, food stamps, free health care!

If you did not pre-count those bags, I'll bet they marked them "UDA" (undetermined amount)and checked the contents as "penny" instead of "mixed". When that happens they are weighed instead of counted. And since zincs are lighter than CU's...

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.
