Caridad, does California have restrictions on collecting rainwater? You're in CA, aren't you?

What if water rationing was imposed in your community? Granted, Venezuela is a special case since they have a nutjob president, Hugo Chavez, but since water is necessary for life, put this on your radar:

Lemon Thrower, you want to be careful about chemicals from the roofing tiles or rain gutters leaching into the water.

Any more thoughts/info on this aspect? Is roof rain harvesting safe?

That's not a dollar, mate...THIS is a dollar.

I think it would be much better to set up a sort of rain-catching funnel-type device catching rainwater and feeding it directly into a barrel instead of using runoff that could leach chemicals from the roofing tile, gutters and drainpipes. There should be illustrations at some of the links above on how to set up something like this.

OK. here's another tip i learned from kathy in fl. with her zombie and panflu stories. use your soda and juice bottles to store water as well. you can get family members who aren't recycling to donate their bottles to you.

When I visited Cades Cove awhile back, most places there had a spring house. The water would run into the back of the house, fill a trough, and the overflow fed back into the stream, This kept the water fresh, but most were a bit away from the house. I always thought a bit of PVC pipe could bring the water to wherever it was wanted, then return it to the stream. Where I currently live, I have an excellent well on the site. My only issue is it's an electric pump. When I can afford it, I want to either sink a second well, or set modify my current set=up so I have a hand pump as well.

Are you throwing that out?

Is PVC toxic? I thought PVC was typically only used for outflow pipes and not for incoming water sources such as for human consumption.

I have bought from this comapny before.
the drums I bought some have water in them and the others have Gas with Stabil in them.
I have used Gas during the Hurricane Katrina and Rita that was 7 years old, with a double the recommended amout of Stabil, the generator never sputtered.
I ran the generator non stop except to change oil for 2 weeks.
55 Gallon plastic as sturdy as a steel drum.
there is a place for a Faucet and a regular 3-4 inch opening on the top side.
I have built a place to lay them down about 4 foot high with the faucet on the bottom and the fill on the top, it will hold about 50 gallon this way.

hey guys great topic! i saw a show on pbs once a couple of years ago, the show featured this guy from TX who started his own business selling rainwater collection stuff. it seems the well water in his area was smelly or something. I remember the guy saying that if you keep the water covered and out of the sun, it would stay potable for years. he claimed to have a tank that had like 8 year old water in it that was still good. he had a formula for how much water storage you would need per person to keep the system self sustaining. he even had a collection system on his chicken coop, for the chickens. he claims that rainwater is much better than well water as it is naturaly distilled. makes sense to me...here is the website: You must be logged in to see this link. Hope this helps!
