5000 sorted with 905 coppers (19 of which were wheats).
18.1% That's nearly a two point drop in my average for the Dallas area. I hope it is an aberration. |

Hi,
I'm getting about 20% copper here in Seattle. I bought 11 boxes a few weeks ago from various banks, and I haven't gotten any 'bad boxes' from that run.
A few months ago, I got a 'minty fresh' box of 2002-D's, and another box of 2002-D's that had various 'odd' pennies in the mix.
They were BoFA's - so I could see right thru the plastic to see the 'odd' pennies.
I'm in no mood to shuck plastic rolls to get at one lousy penny that may or may not be copper. Those rolls go straight into the 'spend' pile.

My latest hand search was a group of five boxes from my regional supply bank. They were brinks-wrapped and yeilded 30.69% copper. The complete breakdown was:
American Cu: 3579 Canadian pre-'80: 119 Canadian '80-'96: 138
There was also a 1909-P Wheat Cent in the mix, but nothing else too spectacular. The percentage is right around average for this part of a Southeast Michigan. |

Brinks Box #1 for this morning: 242 copper memorials 6 copper wheats 41 1982s- 31 copper, 10 zinc.
11.2%. Bleah.
Weighing out the rolls, it looks like box #2 will be good for less than 50 coppers. Plus, Brinks shorted me 3 cents.
i have lost favor with the Penny Gods |

Well.. at least you get most of your money back. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Tried to buy $100 worth of pennies. They would only give me $50. Both boxes were duds. That's 7 of my last 12 boxes, plus two that were all but duds. Looks like i got into this hobby too late! |

My first order of 10 boxes came out with 9 being all Minty Fresh 2008. You got to just keep going - I see one sorter pulled solid copper on a batch of pennies. Try another bank, try asking for smaller quantities (less then 1 box to get Customer Wrapped Rolls).

Don't give up lanispet. I went through a period where just about every box I got was a dud.. including entire shipments of 24 boxes. You just hang in there and things get better. Rethink your sourcing stategy. Try different banks.. maybe some in a different town like where you work. Try a few drive-buys during your lunch hour. Just ask for rolls rather than boxes. You get the CWR that way. Sometimes they have a lot of CWR and are happy that you are willing to buy it so they don't have to ship it. With times getting harder for folks right now more and more of those old penny jugs are getting rolled up and deposited at the bank. You are not too late. This next year is probably going to be the absolute best time ever for those of us that like to sort pennies! |

Heh, yeah, i've gotten tremendously lucky on a couple of CWR buys (glad to see the old people in my area are good for something other than polluting the local waterways with Buicks). Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of banks around me, so it's time- and gas-consuming getting pennies $10-$20 at a shot (seems like $10 is the "sweet spot" around here, one bundle of rolls per hand... more than that and they start asking for an account).
i'm going to try talking to another local bank tomorrow and see if they'll do orders for customers... They never seem very busy, so maybe they'll put forth a little extra effort for a new account. |

Today's buying report: 2 TD Canada Trust Branches and a Pharmasave Branch yielded: $60 face in Nickel (3 blocks) $15 face in Pennies (3 blocks) $18.21 face X 50 bags in cTwoonies, cLoonies, US cRosies, cJeffss and cLincoins.
I liked the math of $18.21 face for just $1.49 plus tax. Instant profit so I bought 50 bags. And yes you get the same kind of weird looks and questions when you buy 50 bags of coins at the drugstore.
Will sort the steel out from the copper and nickel later. Will just drop mixed c coins at my banks to prompt better service.

I want to know more about this deal. Why did you only buy 50 bags? Why would they sell $18.21 for $1.49 plus tax? Is this a Canadian pharmacy? What is the catch here? |
