Picked up a brick of nickels today.

So far, I haven't sorted any of my nickels. I'm keeping them all sealed for now.

After hitting an older accumulation of nickels at the bank that time forgot, I went after dimes and quarters

4 rolls Canadian dimes - 3 in the same wrappers as Friday's nickels - 123 Ni, (61.5%), almost all of which came from the three older rolls
1 silver (1967 - not sure if its high or low silver) - also from the older set
I also recognized many similar tool marks on the older dimes - whoever previously owned them liked to torture coins. Some of the nickels last week had been actually deformed. Oh the humanity.

2 rolls Canadian quarters - neither from the old collection (why won't they let me into the vault to pick my own?)
32 Ni (40%) - highest percentage (by far) in a year. Must have been a couple of rolls missed by the Mint.

Also 10 rolls of nickels - 92 Ni (23%)

Sorted $225 in Brinks boxes. $57.21 in Copper and 107 wheats with 2 being 1918 which was the oldest. I have about $265 in zincs to dump now so I can get more boxes.

Why are you guys weighing the Brinks boxes?

Speed. Saves wear & tear on machines & eyeballs.

2500 pennies in a box times 2.5 grams per zinc penny divided by 453.593 grams in a pound = 13.77 pounds for a completely zinc box - plus a little for the box.

2500 pennies times 3.11 grams per copper penny divided by 453.593 = 17.14 pounds for a completely copper box.

15 pounds is a common weight for the average circulating mix now.

Ah, every Brinks box I've gotten here has been a steady mix from 25-40% copper.

I went in a National City branch Monday and they had about 30 kennedy halves sitting in the tray. The teller let me look at them and I got 3 40% halves for .50 each.

Only started weighing the Brinks boxes after I got my first dud. It has saved a lot of time since then. I don't even have to break the seal. If the box weighs between 6385 and 6400 grams it is a solid zinc dud. I just walk it over and put it in the zinc return stack. Dropped off 10 of those at a few of my banks today. The advantage of doing box weights is it allows for quick returns to free up your capital to buy more pennies with.

Coin Buying Report for today:
22 CWR pennies
8 BWR pennies
5 BWR nickels
15 CWR nickels
$34 face half dollars - which included a 69-S and a 97-S - Love when you see the silver band as they hand it to you.
13 Shiny rolls P mint Oklahoma quarters
2 Shiny rolls P mint Utah quarters
2 Shiny rolls P mint Idaho quarters
3 Shiny rolls P mint Monroe dollars
3 Franklin halves
1 Morgan Silver dollar
1 tenth oz gold eagle

Hoard -
You need to change your name to Gigaton or something.

Maybe not - sounds too much like Gigolo.

What's the Japan Olympics set...1964?

El Dee.. hey, maybe that way I could fund more penny purchases.. LOL

Yes, the Japan Olympics set was 1964 in Tokyo. The coins are common.. I already have a couple of sets.. it is the original issue case that is tough to find. I wish I had never sold off my Russian 1980 Moscow 150 ruble and 100 ruble sets.

The silver tiger tongues from Siam were used between 1591 and 1705.
Denominations are 2 tamlung - 120 grams
and 1.5 tamlung - about 92.4 grams
Really cool looking pieces of money - I haven't been able to buy any at a show in several years.

Hand sorted about $1,200 worth of Halfs (I was off recovering from some dental work, so I needed something to do):

19 40% halfs
2 90% Kennedy's
1 2006 S proof (it is a little scratched up, but it still looks cool!)
1 Quarter (?)

I had about 10 rolls to do when I got home after picking up our little guy, and he had a good time unwrapping the rolls, looking at the edges to see if they were silver or "coppery", and then finding shiny ones for his half-dollar collection.

10 rolls Canadian nickels

Skunked again! Another ten rolls of shrink-wrapped 2008s! And this was from one of my best banks. They tell me they are swamped with them. I may have to wait a few weeks for them to clear.

Just bought $10 from a new bank, the teller said that it was an unusual day because several people had been buying more pennies than usual. I hope it's not related to the article that came out today about metal prices driving the price of coins up!

Anyway I sorted these by eye and got about 17% copper. So it's still out there...for now.

But how much longer before it's all gone?
