This is an interesting article looking at what the current values of pre-EU currencies would be if the EU fell apart

that fact that such an article was written itself is interesting.

i'm not familiar with each of those, but my recollection is that many of those are convertible to euros (and then exchangeable for dollars) at much higher rates than given in the article. that suggests to me either these european countries drastically underperformed the u.s. over the last decade or the article has teh numbers low to dissuade popular support for disbanding the EU.

I don't think you can exchange the French Franc or the Belgium Franc anymore; it is past the expiration date of them being convertable.

wikipedia generally will tell you a lot. often times there is a different trade in date for coins and for paper. sometimes, there is a different date depending on the year of the paper currency.
