I just started sorting nickels. What's the deal/value with pre-1960s nickels? I'm assuming it's purely numismatic since there's no silver content in anything after 1945.

You may want to do a little searching on eBay before you right off the pre-60 Jeffersons. Everyone knows about the 1938-D, 1938-S, 1939-D, and the 1950-D, but run a search on rolls of 1946-S, 1948-S, 1949-S, 1950-P, or 1951-S in XF condition. You won't get rich putting rolls of these scarcer (not rare) dates together, but they are going for a premium now and may increase in value in the near future. You really can't lose. They have the same composition as all other U.S. nickels that people here are putting on the side, including myself. In fact, I'll guarantee you can quadruple your money. I will buy any of the dates I mentioned above at 20 cents each in XF condition.

Really? I'm assuming that the chances of finding those years is a tad bit better than a Buffalo or Canadian King...

I typically find a buffalo or WN per box on ave. Pre 1960's are running @ 1%. In a few short years you'll be hard pressed to find any of these. If TSHTF with the tenuous global economy then Gresham's law will be sudden and swift with nickels because most don't have PM's and when they realize that they should have some, it will be too late and they'll look to industrial metals as the last "affordable" option to park wealth (or what's left of it by then)

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

Agreed. Many people already have a hard time getting nickels. They just aren't that many of them compared to other coins (except halfs or dollars).

Too bad I don't have a ton of $$$$ to put into nickels. I have a bank that would order me as many as I want; she usually gives me 2 boxes a week but I know she would give me more if I asked.
