I had to turn in a box of unsorted pennies today. It almost killed me to do it, but felt that I had to.
I went to a bank to see if I could get another box of LP 4 pennies. The teller told me they had one more box in the vault, but she couldn't sell it to me because it was the only box they had. I asked if I could bring in some hand rolled cents and trade. They were agreeable with that, but that they would have to weigh every roll to insure that they were full.
I went down to the next bank and bought a box of pennies hoping that they would have some LP4's. They didn't have any, but sold me a box. I took the box down the street and figured it would work out good. I hated to turn in an unsearched box but figured it would save them the hassle of weighing each roll because they were brinks wrapped plastic rolls.
Nothing doing. They had to weigh every roll. Then they had to open the box of LP4's and count every roll. Then they asked if I had a bag to put them into because they coundn't give me the empty box??????
Finally, to top it off, they weren't new LP4's. Just an average brick of mixed pennies.!!!

They had weigh every roll? That's comical. That's the most "fouled-up" story I've heard all day.
These people must be bored beyond belief.

Sounds to me like they didn't want to deal with roll hunter and did everything possible to discourage you. At least now you don't have to tear open all those rolls. |

This weighed every roll thing has me intrigued. They had a scale? What weight was acceptable?
The weight for pennies, or course varies. They had a scale at the bank? Did you you see it?
Did they take them to the back, where you could not see?
Bman has the clue. |

They did that to me turning in 25 rolls of halves a couple of weeks ago. I think it was a PNC bank. They had a small scale and weighed every roll. |

Halves weight is a known quanity. But cents? You can't tell, unless they're all copper or all zinc. |

Yes, they had a small postage scale. She weighed all 50 rolls while I waited. They had a sticker on the scale that told that weights were acceptable. Each coin had a range. The range was fairly tight for nickels, dimes and quarters, but fairly loose for pennies. She said that the only time they have rolls that fall out of the range is when thye get rolls of wheats.
The range for pennies was between 4.2 and 4.8 oz. An all copper roll would weigh 5.3 oz. |
