I would be very interested in attempting to determine what our copper percentages are based on which part of the country we live, specifically related to which Federal Reserve District you live in. If anyone is kind enough to respond to this thread, please predetermine what district you are in, and only report your copper percentage, so there isn't so much data to sift through. The higher the number of respondents, the greater accuracy of any resultant guesstimate. If you are West Coast there are branch banks in Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake, and Los Angeles (in addition to San Francisco). Seattle services Alaska. The others would be whichever you live nearest to. If you aren't sure which district you're in, check out the map:

Apparently there are a lot of "branch" banks in the Federal Reserve system, too, as I know my bank head teller told me that they get coin from the Fed. Bank in Jacksonville, Florida.

If you know which Branch Bank of the Reserve your banks tell you that they get their coin from, then list that. I'm just curious how widespread the variations are of the percentages we are encountering. Everyone always jokingly asks if any big sorters live near them, and if it could "drain" the copper in their area. We already have a thread for reporting copper finds, but no one lists where they live in that one. |

I live in District 9 my copper percentages have run in the low thirties for the last 3 years. They never seem to drop. I know it seems like I am complaining because my percentages run too high but I think the only way we will see higher prices for our copper is if it becomes harder to find it in circulation. Kind of like finding wheats now. We have a lot of people taking copper out of circulation across the nation but we don't seem to be making dent in the supply. Every year that goes by you would think the copper supply has to be decreasing. I'm ready for the melt ban to be lifted. |

6- 13%
btw, i applaud your effort but i think the differences have more to do with locale than Fed Bank district.
for example, in the south, there has been strong growth in cities like Atlanta and Charlotte. they have a higher percentage of zincs. in smaller towns that have not grown so rapidly since 1982, percentages are probably higher. |

You make a good point LT. And also, in reply to the long list of branch banks supplied by PTP... this isn't going to be a scientific poll (there's no way to be precise, I just want to get a general idea) so even if there is a branch bank near you that you think your bank gets coin from, just list the larger District. There will be small variations by branch, but the overall numbers should conform with a fair amount of specificity within the larger district. I'm just curious to see how much difference there is by district, which will help me number crunch later when I attempt to determine a nationwide average. Thanks for all the replies so far. |

from past threads, my sense is that the nationwide average is 22-25%. I dont' get that except once in a blue moon from CWR. |

Dist 6 around 18% in the Fed Boxes so far this year.
I like LT argument I am in a very small town and I get more boxes of CWR than Fed's. I usually average in the 20%+ , and have gotten up to 40% copper once. Not much new money coming in down here, however when I do get the Fed boxes they average around the 18%. |

District 12
During 2008 thru the 1st half of 2009, I was averaging 20 to 24%.
From the 3rd Quarter 2009 to the present that % has dropped to the 16 to 19 range (with 19 being more unusual)... sooo, from my experience, I have noticed a steady drop, which does make sense. As newer cents come out and copper ones are pulled, saved or otherwise removed, percentages have to drop.
I have also run into at least 4 others here that are saving coppers...so that would also account for the drop. |

District 7 (Chicago)...I sort in SE Wisconsin...
27-28% Cu 1959-1981
total CU approaches 31% when you add in the Cu 1982's, wheats and Cu Canadians.
We have it pretty good here compared to some other areas.

17.3% on the last 50 dollars sorted. District 12.
Last year was averaging 22-25% and dropped to about 19% average, just like ZigMeister in 12. Interesting. |
