How can tell you tell the difference between the 1982's C and Z without weighing them? I just started sorting and have @ 20lbs of 82's and no idea what to do with them. Thanks for any help.

I've only got one with a counterstamp, a masonic symbol. I was curious if anyone else had seen these.

As far as I know, it is stated "In God We Trust" on the US dollar. How can I trust this currency if I do not believe in God?

Possession is nine-tenths of the law.

When I give my two cents, they're always copper!

Hi Dave et al.
I bought a steel punch set from Harbor Freight. Nothing fancy, just letters and numbers. Then line the pennies up and hit the punch lightly with a hammer.

Since I have a background in music/percussion, the easiest way for me is to listen to them. If you drop a copper on a hard surface, it rings. Zincolns have a duller, lower pitch. Always drop them on the same surface and you'll hear the difference. If you are casually hand sorting in front of the TV like I do, you can "play" them like crotales. Balance the 1982 on your fingertip, and carefully ding it with a another coin. If you do it right, the copper will sing like a zen chime. It's a beautiful thing. The zinc just goes "clink".

My $0.02. For your 20lbs of 1982 only, I'd recommend the drop test; it's faster.

I agree with Zyll, Dropping them onto a hard surface works well. Try it with a few know coppers and a few known zincs. The sound is very different. I did this with a co-worker in the break room. He got them all right. I dropped them and he told me copper or zinc. This was the first time he has ever listened to them also.

You don't have to be the BEST you just have to be.......SLICK

I'll be on the look out for these. Did you put it above the date?

Cool about your percussion/music background. Do you still play and do you perform with any groups? Send me a PM if you don't care to discuss this on the board.

Can't wait to see if anyone finds one of these counterstamped pennies.

Enjoy your searches, everyone.

Now that's a really cool find! Living in Central Florida, I find that especially interesting.

Could you take a picture that the counterstamp would show up? That sounds like a pretty detailed design. Neat.

Enjoy your searches, everyone.

Thanks PTP;
Yes the C/S is above the date, where most reside on the Lincoln Cent. I'll PM about the music stuff...
Take care and happy sorting!

The company I work for placed a couple thousand pennies into circulation with a embossed "Sherlock Holmes" head smoking a pipe.... doubt that that is your "wierd guy" but if it is.... congrats to you for finding such a treasure :-)

Happy Prospecting!

I found an Arkansas counter-stamped penny from 1974 once.
Not sure why I revived this thread, just decided to do a small bit of digging.

I've found a bunch of counterstamped cents while roll searching

15 different states (various dates from 1960-2002)
10 JFK
2 Jimmy carter
2 Masonic symbols
1 Batman logo
2 with Liberty Bell & outline of USA
1 with a cross cut out of center (no counterstamped but neat)

I know they are not worth anything but I like finding them!

Lots of old threads are worth bringing back up. We talk about a lot of things in cycles here.
1974 is my birth year. You should set that aside for if I ever win a contest.

I have the same board pictured earlier in this thread, with all the cents included. Mine is framed for hanging on a wall and came from the same grandpa mentioned in my tagline.

My last box I found a 1975D Minnesota counterstamp, I knew exactly what it was when I saw it.

Grandpa always told me, "Back in 1964..." I listened.

Selling copper cents @ $2.50/lb. + shipping.
