Posted - 04/08/2008 : 19:23:23 I know next to nothing when it comes to numismatics. When it comes to pennies it's either copper or zinc to me. I would like to change that. What do you folks in the know recommend as a good book or books on the subject. I would like to cover other coins besides pennies. Is the Whitman Red Book worth buying? Thanks.

Like pencilvanian said, the Whitman Red Book is the best all-around source for prices and general information regarding United States coinage. There are also many good reference sources online, such as www.coppercoins.com.
I'll go along with that. And to add one more thing is the person on that coppercoins web site has two books out on just Lincoln Cents. If you go to that web site you could probably order one. They are also available at most coin shows. |

Posted - 04/08/2008 : 19:40:14 The Whitman Red Book is a great place to start as far as American coins is concerned. If you don't need to find out the current prices of coins, pick up a used copy of a red book for the history and metallic content of US Coins. The information doesn't change much year after year so a used copy is a good buy. |
