Figured While I'm at it may buy some Extra ammo to have around.Should I just buy for the guns I have (12ga,22, and 30-30)or pick up a few others for a possible trade someday?I got a coupon for the local Outdoor store and had been giving it some thought

"I would be screwed when I ran out of ammo. I couldn't snare a deer... don't have that skill set. I will have to pray I don't need it or I can place that .22 well enough if i have to. I have an old pellet gun... I wonder if there are any pellets around."

It's not hard to snare a deer. Snares are very easy to make from cable. If you trap and use snares, many states require deer stops on your snares so deer can free themselves. Set one on any deer trail and you can have one by the leg. A .22 to the neck at the base of the skull will put a deer down quick and humanely.

any caliber will do really.
the best caliber is the one you have when you need it.

.44 is very decent. And you are correct, I wouldn't want anyone unloading a revolver of shorts or even CBs at me, especially at my head. However for a favorite sidearm round, I have to stick to the .45. If I was to have a rifle/pistol in the same caliber a carbine .44, .357, or 9mm, seem like good overall combo's, but I am a smaller fellow and a .44 starts to make me sore after 6-10 shots.

Then I start to get "the flinch".

.44 mag is my round. used to work at a gun store for 5 years and stockpiled cheap ammo by the case. ive got numerous revolvers and a couple of lever actions chambered for the 44.
for a light carry gun i used to carry an airlight s&w 8-shot22(i think model 317? gotta check) its not titanium but it weighs a little less, anyway i had the hammer bobbed and action worked a little, granted a 22 for personal defense is on the weaker side...who wants to take 8 cci stingers? there would be a short line.

No arguments there, I love my 10/22 as well, but it needs "bullets". For squirrel and rabbit and birds, I just need a chunk of lead. Much stealthier too.

I wouldn't waste a .22 on the 99.5% odds against it would be a perfect shot. If that were the case and that was my target animal, and again if I had NO regard for game laws, I would snare the deer with a head/rack placed 1/4" braided cable snare. Ether a broke neck or a perfect small caliber shot placement. Thats in a survival situation only and only then if I could preserve the meat. A wounded animal often goes to water and a poorly placed shot could mean potentialy poisoning your or someone else's water supply.

I will take a .22 rifle over a pellet gun. I do agree that the pellet gun will take down small game. I think the difference is this... A .22 will take down a deer. I am not saying that is a good gun to do it with, but it will do it. It isn't legal in my state to hunt deer with a .22 (If you don't have near exact placement of the shot, then the deer is going to die slowly or just be wounded), but if you were going to kill the deer or go without food... screw the animal rights people. Shoot it and track it down if it doesn't die right away.

I have my .22 scoped to 50 yards. I figure it is close to 1 inch radius at that distance. (note that means the deer would need to be pretty close for you have a good head shot)

A pellet gun isn't that much cheaper than a .22 rifle and 33 grain bullet going a little faster has better bang for the buck.

Just so it is clear... to SC DNR if they are reading this... I have not and will not be shooting deer this year with a .22 rifle. If all hell breaks loose, all i have is the .22, and it is kill the deer with it or go hungry, then I beg forgiveness in advance.

An AR-15 is on my list, but I don't think it will fit in my pocket. The AR-15 might be next....

Ah, the calico!! I had a good friend that had the .22 pistol calico, man we had a ball with that 50 rnd mag!!! An AR would be a nice addition, but my favorite protein getter right now for small game has to be.....

...my pellet rifle!! Thats right a mere airgun. My .22 shoots at roughly 1200 fps, while my airgun is rated at 1000fps. Pelets are plentiful and cheap. With a mold or swage you can cast/make your own. Very quiet report, and no recoil, perfect to teach proper marksmanship techniques. And it is both powerful and accurate. I have a 3-9 variable power scope with a mil dot reticle and can easily BUST walnuts at 35-40 yards. I average from tracking trajectories at differant yardages that I am getting 900fps with a 4.9gr hollow point.

I have the crosman storm xt and it set me back 89.95 on sale at Captain Wallies House of Chinese Imports, and came with the scope, silicon protective sleeve, targets, scope cap, and trigger lock. I have had the crosman g1 extreme, and the sierra pro, all three use the same spring powered power plant. There are models such as the airforce condor that is supposed to be 1/4" groups at 80 yards or so and uses compressed air and comes with a detachable hand pump. The quackenbush rifles include a .454, .357, and a .50 IIRC and the gentleman that makes them has taken whitetail deer and a cape buffalo with his airguns.

I feel that todays quality airguns are something thats really underestimated by many of todays firearms enthusiasts.

Beretta CX4 Storm carbine fires 9mm or .40, so does the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 (discontinued, but not too expensive). You can get kits to chamber an AR-15 in anything from .17HMR to various novelty .50 cartridges.
Of course, if i had to pick just one 9mm rifle (and couldn't afford an MP5) it would have to be the Calico :)

I had some no-name 9mm rifle once. Gave it to my brother before his deployment. Shoots nice.

swusc Posted - 07/06/2008 : 23:47:14
I think the S&W .40 is pretty common as well.

Makarov 9mm is hard to find now. Last time I saw it cheap I bought like 5 or 6 boxes. I don't even shoot mine much.

In theory you would like for your rifle and pistol to shoot the same type of rounds so it would be easier to transport and stock ammo. I am not sure of any rifle that shoots common pistol ammo though now.

The Winchester 1873 and 1894 did, but those shells aren't common or cheap now.
I found one through some research. Uberti Model 1873 I have never even seen the rifle before but it shoots pistol rounds. If it discharges the spend shells from the top like the winchester 1873, then you can't use a scope. The Marlin 336 is a better rifle in MHO due to the shells being discharged from the side.

Can't go wrong with 30.06 on the rifle.
You can resize the brass for reloading .270 and 25.06.
.308 & .223 are also great, cheap and will always be in demand as military and sporting cartridges.
12 ga. is the most common shotgun.
A .357 will also shoot a .38 if you go with a six shooter.

Buy ammo for the gun that is most comfortable for you to shoot.
Being comfortable translates to being accurate.
Remember practice, practice and more practice.
Knowing your weapon is the key.

Bluegill makes some good points--and the Makarov 9mm ammo is definitely going to be hard to find when TSHTF.
Kurr Posted - 07/06/2008 : 12:21:21
.22, .223(5.56), 30-06, .308(7.62), 30-30, 8mm, 7mm are the rifle calibers I see most often.

.22, .380, .38, .357, 9mm, 40mm, .44, .45 are the pistol calibers I see people with most often.

20 and 12 guages in my area birdshot thru slugs, very few 10s and 16s in my area.

If I happened to come across deals and was looking to stock up on ammo, these are the calibers I would by by the case.

And I would throw back some raw lead as well, with molds for reloading.

reloading equip, and brass.

I have a 4" model, it is a nice gun. With Black Hills 158 grain loads I can bounce a 2 liter soda bottle at 100 yards with it. That seems to be the combo that hits that sweet spot for accuracy.

As to the OP's question. If we get into a situation where we are actually needing and using firearms on a regular basis for defense, a few thoughts.

At this point there will be no law enforcement, what is left of the military will be guarding strategic installations. The public will be left to fend for itself.

Who ever your banding together with should all have the same caliber weapons. You will be able to pass ammo among your group and not have to worry interchangability.

Preferebly what ever is the most common. This will make re-suppling easier.

I addition, more than likely you are going to come across dead bodies and the ammo you take off of them would have a better chance of being usable for yourself and your group (unless somebody beats you to it). That situation may also allow you to upgrade firearms too.

If you don't currently have a certain caliber, but is a common one, it might not be a bad idea to allot a small perctentage of your ammo budget to have those calibers.

You could trade with it, or you might aquire a gun of that caliber at a later date. Either through trade or off of a dead body.

Just my 2 cents...

Typically, Eastern Bloc hardware quality depends on which country manufactured it. East German, Polish, Bulgarian and Yugoslav gear is good, in that order, Romania usually a bit behind, China iffy. i had a seriously negative experience with Albanian ammo and won't buy anything from there again.

S&W (and Colt) revolvers are crazy expensive... i prefer Ruger. They feel rock-solid to the hand, even if they are a bit bulky.

i'm pretty heavy on .22 and 12ga, a bit lighter on heavy rifle ammo because it can be reloaded and you're likely to use less of it.

Where the heck do you get a coupon for a .45? (kavajava)

I have been very pleased with them (I have several, including the East German, Russian and Chinese models). Easy to shoot, jams are rare, inexpensive (but not cheap).

That being said, my experience with other more expensive pistols is limited--maybe if I spent some time with Glocks, Springfield Armory, etc. I would have a different opinion...

But, all in all it is a nice little pistol.

Thanks for the reply. That is the exact gun my buddy has. Going a few places to check them out. Probably not going to buy today though. I use a private dealer who can usually give me a great deal.

Eastern Europe doesn't scream quality to me. :) If you were closer, then I would let you shoot the P64 Makarov. I have heard that a gunsmith can "fix" the double action trigger. It would be a sweet gun after that.

I kind of like the S&W model 642 .38 sp w/ five rounds. http://tinyurl.com/ysma2d It retails for $561 now. It was a $430 gun 3 years ago. It has little to no kick for an adult man (I am 5 10 160). It will fit in your pocket as long as you don't wear your clothes tight. It is no bigger than the Makarov, but it is a rovolver vs semi so it is a little wider around cyclinder of course. I wouldn't say it is a super long range gun though. I would say past 7-10 yards...it becomes a crap shoot. I don't know what its MOA is, but I blame the stub nose barrel. I suck shooting it at 15 yards. I might hit the bad guy in the arm or chest or head or total miss.

I know a few LE use it as a back up... it fits very nicely in an ankle holster. Elite Survival systems has an ankle holster that has a pull out (pocket holster).

I have no ideas about the quality of the gun, but those Cobra Derringer 22LR are pretty cool looking :). Don't know if I would want to trust my life to the hooker/gambler special though.
