Ended up with access to 20 or so old computers. Anything I should do or remove before they go to recycle?

they want you to thro it away so the local recycling centers(owned by the county/state) can charge you taxes to dump and then sell it for more profit.

What Silver said.

If it's your business, yes you should. No different than a carpenter or anyone else. You would be able to deduct the gas (IRS mileage rate) for chasing the stuff. Any tools, insurance, supplies, etc, IRA deductions as well.

The IRS wants your taxes, they don't give you a credit for making money. Just FYI.

Wrong. I've been doing this type of work for over 25 years. I make my living on recycling. I have no other job. Believe me, if you make enough money at it, you will draw unwanted attention to yourself from the alphabet government club. Rule of thumb, if your scrap income makes up 25% of your gross income, you better be reporting it. The good thing is then you can start deducting things like trucks, fuel, insurance, etc. Don't get caught with your fly down.

See the U.S.S.A. in your Chevrolet!

Same in my state. Scrapyards take a scan of your D.L. Once you are in their system, they just punch in your number each time you visit. It doesn't stop thieves, and it's a PITA for everyone else, but it lets the elected weasels pat themselves on the back for "doing something".

By the way, if you ever thought these new laws were enacted to deter theft, you are mistaken. These new ID laws are in place to catch the scrappers that are not reporting their scrap incomes. It's true.

No worries!

Copper Bright and Shiny (stripped wire) only accepted from Industrial Accounts.

I'm covered!
hobo finds Posted - 10/20/2009 : 17:02:34
AZ law no striped wire. http://recycoinc.com/699.html

I too found it hard to believe. Hobo who lives down in Tucson posted a link to the AZ law when I had an earlier question. Seems it was the Legislature's attempt to help curtail the theft of wire from houses and other buildings. I have not yet taken anything to the scrap yard here but talked to a friend who retired from his own contracting business and he said he took abount $100 worth of scrap (some copper and an old aluminum ladder) and he said they treated him like a criminal giving him the 3rd degree, copying his driver's license for a photo and copying his license plate info. Not the country I grew up in.

Thanks Dumpster, but unfortunately in AZ it is illegal to scrap stripped wire...must leave the insulation on. About how much would an average set of 10' jumper cables weigh?

I find it very hard to believe that you can not sell stripped bare copper in AZ. I do believe that it may be illegal to sell burnt copper wire.
Dumpster Diver Posted - 10/13/2009 : 20:07:16
Not sure...I never weighed them but I've found the older they are the more copper is in them. Like everything else, they find a way to produce a cheaper product at a higher price. I try to find them at yard sales and offer a buck or two depending on the gauge.
Also, look for spools of wire if you go to yard sales. They usually aren't even for sale, but if you spot a spool in the garage, make an offer- usually everything has to go!

I just bought 13 computer circuit boards (about 4.5 lbs.) at a yard sale Saturday thinking I can get $2 plus a lb...my 1st scrapping purchase.
Just called my local scrap yard to see if they were interested and they said there is not much demand for them and they would only pay .05 /lb. Any ideas where in Phoenix I could get the $2.40 /lb others are getting?
I also picked up a set of 10' jumper cables for scrap (my 2nd purchase) and he said they would pay .60 to .70 /lb...I'm not sure how much they weigh.

I have been recycling E-scrap for 10 years now, it has been very-very good to me!

What does your local yard do with the hard drives when they come in? And next question where are you located? At 30 cents per pound, I could afford to ship them to the yard.... But I'd like to see them shredded.

For security reasons we do crush our drives before they go to the recycler. In order to get the .30 per pound the drive can be crushed, but not shredded. Also, the PCB must remain on the drive. Our yard is Alters Trading located in Omaha. Brian is the contact person.

Good stuff. I was just going to ask about this since I buy up used laser printers, part them out for the parts I need/want, and get rid of the rest. I'll start keeping the printed circuit boards and other parts.
silversaddle1 Posted - 09/27/2009 : 06:11:36
Sorry, my bad.

.07 per pound or $140.00 per ton.

.10 per pound is my prepared plate & strucural price.

I like the magnets in the hard drives.

The Gold refining forum has a lot more info on where the good stuff is, like the "fingers" on cards and sockets as well as the processors.
There's lots of Cu wire in the power supplies.
