When I first was able to get loose bags of pennies they came in canvas bags, now it is in clear bags marked either from other banks or consumer accounts. Ninety percent of the time I find other coins mixed in. One time I did actually find a silver dime as well.

At first I could understand how a mistake might have happened in a canvas bag. If you have ever worked in a counting room you might understand how someone using a coin counter tossed a bag aside and mistakenly left some coins or militated coins in the bottom.

But give me a break when you have plastic bags and you see dimes clearly in the bag that is plain laziness and being sloppy!

I found $23.60 in dimes out of four $50 bags. The bags were marked from a specific bank.

Does this happen lots to others too?

I loved bags too! Wow, I found my first Canadian silver 5 cent in a bag of Pennies. Lots of cool stuff.

I miss bags! :(

On a good note, I dumped 800 in mixed coin today and it was all right on the money. I had kept a tabulation as I sorted and dropped them into my dump bucket!

The problem is, most likley somebody's piggy bank or til is way short from what it ought to be.
I bought a bag of halves last week. When the teller and I looked at the clear bag and saw a few pennies and some quarters and dimes in it I told it would be short 50 cents for every coin she saw that wasn't a half. It didn't look like it was much so I just paid the $500 and went my way. I was right it was short about $8.00, but the silver made up for it and I made a friend because she didn't have to recount it.
It works both ways... but its sort of a farce when they insist their machine is right no matter what.

To truely understand this you have to have a coin sorter and sort a lot of coin. You may think its hard for coins to get into differnt bags, but when you run a lot of coin when the machine gets dirty all the coins tend to go into differnt denomanations.

Also I don't think its so much as the person being lazy but its the time factor. Typically its not worth the time for tellers to try to resort by hand or machine to get everything 100% right on. Most tellers have other things to do that are most time and cost effective.

I wish my bank was that lazy. I get 2 bags a week and never find more than 4 or 5 dimes.

Welcome to the wonderful world of loose bags. All kinds of goodies all the time. They don't care if there are other coins in there. Usually all the extras are really that, extra. Good count on the cents, but extra other coins. The banks are not losing anything, the guy returning his mixed coins is. I never return dimes into a coin machine as they are frequently not counted and sent in to the cent bag.

All depends on the quality/age of the machine doing the counting. Every bag I get usually has something else in it. From trash to treasure. I've found all kinds of things in them. Now you see why bags are the best....

I have found about every type of coin in circulation in bags. It makes you wonder how much you are getting shorted when you run your coins through a machine?
