I labored for a long time under the belief that it was a rare test clad variety (the mint was experimenting like crazy that year), and did a lot of research on the subject, before finally talking to an expert in error coins (Fred Weinberg), who said it was most likely just gold-plated. A mass spectrometer confirmed this. |

My guess is that it is counterstamped with the 12/31/74 on it as a rememberance for something on that date and perhaps they gold plated it somewhere that did the counterstamping, ie for a golden wedding anniversary, etc. BUT, this is just random speculating on my part. I would definitely keep it, for no other reason that it's a cool "gee whiz, look what I've found" coin. |
