Sell...??? Sell...???

Never,never ever.

This is all about hoarding.

Uh-oh HCBTT don't you have the most?

Nope, not me.. I sell! There are several folks that have more than me. And I'm gonna put off that dying thing for at least another week or 2.. I am still behind on sorting.

You sell wherever you can get the most!

I agree--there is no need to melt--just look at silver which trades based on "face"--it is a known quantity--just as copper pennies are. The melt ban might need to be lifted to realize the true value of the copper pennies, but I think they will trade just like "junk" silver--no need to melt.

Yeah, I would love to get 2% silver in my sorting of halves, quarters and dimes! For now I am very happy with the copper percentage as it is.
Lemon Thrower Posted - 06/19/2008 : 20:32:15
lifting the melt ban would allow small horders to get close to melt value, 90% or more, but it would kill the golden goose. Would you really want to do this if you are only finding 2% Cu rather than 20%?

longer term, demand for copper will skyrocket. electric cars and demand from india and china ensure this. medium term, we could see hyperinflation in the u.s. having real money is not a bad idea. junk silver is a little more convenient but hard to get for free.

As Epaphras states, the melt ban is an advantage to us smaller hoarders. Once the ban is lifted the industrial sorting will start in earnest and all the copper will disappear. I am not anxious to see it lifted.

Us smaller hoarders? The only one that can compete with you is the BOE (Bank of England)

I said five years. I also hope that the melt ban stays in place so we can have a supply of coppers.
HoardCopperByTheTon Posted - 05/10/2008 : 23:30:54
I agree.. Long live the melt ban!

Actually, if you look at the latest legistlation proposed by that congess critter to change the penny and nickel content to steel you will notice that the time to convert the penny is way shorter than for the nickel. Could this be because Jackson Metals still has that congress critter in their pocket and the whole thing is to try to hurry up the conversion to alternate metal so the melt ban on pennies can be lifted soon thereafter? When the melt ban is lifted it will be bad news for us guys here on the board.

That is a very good point. I totally agree!

LONG LIVE THE MELT BAN!!

Why hurry to melt and sell. The penny like silver coins is a recognizable form of metal it's weight and value are known and understood. While always good at face value the upside potential of the penny is probably one of the best long term opportunities available to the astute individual willing to put forth the effort necessary to accumulate.
If you want to sell out your accumulation post on buy, sell trade. I'm sure there are no shortage of buyers.

Actually, i imagine that once the melt ban is lifted, there will be a short-term dip in the market price of copper in the U.S. as hoarders cash out, and industrial-scale sorters start cranking up. i'd wait a while, m'self.

If you were to see sellers making a "significant profit" on ebay, you would suddenly see significantly more sellers and the price would slide back down.

What, you thought this was easy money?

If you were to find someone willing to "melt now" and risk fines and prison what price do you think they would want to pay you? Certainly not melt.. nowhere near melt. Why would they pay you more than they could purchase the same thing on eBay for? They would look at a list of completed auctions and then try to negotiate a direct price lower than that.

i didnt mean i would try to sell to a melter. i would rather share the risk and the profit with someone willing to melt.
kwen25 Posted - 05/08/2008 : 02:43:04
In the long run they should be worth more as pennies than as melted scrap, as you will have the sum of both the copper value and the numismatic value. And as someone else said, even post-SHTF, people will instantly recognize the percent of copper purity in a pre-82 penny, but have no idea what content of scrap copper is.

As far as buyers, many on here buy and sell with each other....Melt ban, we all need it to last as long as possible. Once the ban is lifted there will be major commercialization of copper sorting. The copper would soon dry up. I hope it isn't lifted until the coppers are gone....

Deal

I agree that SHTF is not needed for making a profit on copper. Silver coins are selling over their face value without the need for them to be melted.

And I concur that the melt ban is what is keeping the copper in circulation.

Besides, if it gets to the point that bartering is big, wouldn't having the copper in bullion form make it easier to trade? A little bulky maybe, but everyone recognizes a dated penny, whereas a copper ingot could be of questionable purity.

Good point.

Who knows? But personally, I think it'll come sooner than most expect. Probably not until after the upcoming bullsh!t election.

Why are we in a rush for the melt ban to be up? The ban is to us small-time hoarders an advantage.
