We obviously all handle large quantities of pennies and perhaps nickels. Does anyone buy rolls of other coins to look through? A few weeks ago I realized my half dollar folder was still completely empty, though I've had it for years. So I've started buying a few rolls whenever I go to the bank, if they have any. I'm wondering if general cluelessness about this denomination might lead to some real finds in bank rolls. Judging by some of the ebay auctions I've seen, a lot of people don't have any idea about the silver content of pre-1971 coins. It's been comical spending them around town- most people either don't know what they are or get all excited because they're "so rare". I've been through maybe 15 rolls- no silver, but today I did find a 2004-P, which was never released for circulation.

Even averaged out among the 3 boxes that was still a respectable haul. Better than a lot of us are getting. Congrats.

Took a break from school and got the other $400... My backpack is kinda heavy. I'll post results later.

You've been sorting without gloves!
Now you're truly infected.

I went to the bank to make a deposit and looked over into the teller's coin tray. I thought I saw some silver...and I indeed did. She only had $5.00 in halves, but they were all 40%. I was even "hunting" for halves today.

Picked up a Brinks box this evening.

1 Walker
2 40%
12 NIFC's

Minimal, but at least it's not a skunk...

Nice on the Washington dollar!
The best I've found is one box that had 4 rolls with an extra quarters in four of the rolls.
knibloe Posted - 12/01/2008 : 20:27:15
Sorted 1k this week . The first roll had a washington dollar in it. It was pure profit as there were also 20 halves in the roll. I also found 2- 40% halves.
drs499m Posted - 12/01/2008 : 17:19:09

DR-DOUBLE"L"-ING
I'm lucky if I even approach 2% of your monthly sorting!!!!!

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. In my area I can dump at any of the 100 or so banks within 10 miles. Also, $40k/month in halves would start to come back to me here :P.

drs499m,
I'll pick up and dump at the same bank because my puny dump will be diluted with the coins taken in from the whole route that get's serviced, sent to their central location and re-wrapped with many other routes. I'll order boxes any time I have the cash.
I live in a sparsely populated rural area and I'll take what I can get.
I drive 53 miles one way to work at the largest town in the County (just happens to be the County Seat) and only have a handful of banks to deal with.
I've been waiting 4 months for the only coin counter in town to get their Half bag switched. I've been able to purchase the last two from them and they should be calling just about any time now.
When I drive by for CWR's I don't buy my marked ones. Some have shown up at other banks across town.

Take it to a couple of coin shops and strike up a conversation.
I'm going to try to put together a collection of the proofs I find in circulation. I've found 14 different dates so far.
pennyman Posted - 11/29/2008 : 17:06:11
One box.... 2 1967s 1 1968 1 1969 and a 1987 CLAD proof. Odd thing was that the box didnt have a coin older than 1996.

Anyone have ideas on what a 1987 clad proof is worth?? Its a little bit scratched up
Computer Jones Posted - 11/29/2008 : 16:28:02
2 boxes last night.
1 Skunk, unless you count a 2002D.
The other box:
2 '64
1 '67
1 '68
1 '69
1 Ben '53
2 '04
2 '05
1 1984 that looks like it was gold plated at one time (mostly rubbed off now) that is stamped 1960 to the left of Kennedy's neck and 1985 on the right.
1 1972 kind of worn that I can't find the engraver's initials.
Epaphras Posted - 11/28/2008 : 21:16:01
3 boxes, 2 90% and 3 40%

*sigh*
Hirbonzig Posted - 11/28/2008 : 20:30:22
1 1/2 boxes and just one 40% half.

7 banks, no silver today.
oober Posted - 11/28/2008 : 15:53:48
Well, if it happens again, my pickup bank will become my dump bank. that wil show em!! :)
drs499m Posted - 11/28/2008 : 14:55:26
Why would you bring them back? You're only going to get your own dumps... If you wanted to seriously sort for silver, you'd need to dump at a bank with one armored car company and pick up from a bank with a different one.
Computer Jones Posted - 11/28/2008 : 12:17:46
Could be either.
I'd open an account at another bank and ask if they will order Halves for you.
My last account was opened because they said they would order unlimited boxes of halves and didn't mind if I bring them back after I sorted them.
I'll try that for a few months and see how it goes.
