Never having been to one myself, and still being a relative newbie (less than a year) at collecting PM, I didn't know.

Is there usually ample security at shows to make sure that buyers don't get mugged as they're leaving?

Picked up a handful of halves at the coin shop for 11.65x face today. Sadly, I had to pass on a bunch because I didnt bring enough cash.

Bought two war nickels for $1 each, and a silver 1960 Venezuelan 50 centavo coin for 10 cents.

Turned down the most overpriced Indian Head cents I've ever seen. Dealer was asking $1 each for some of the worst grade Indians... dented, pitted, worn out. I told him I could get better quality Indians from a different dealer's booth 20 yards away for only 35cents each. "If it's a better deal, than go there," he replied. I can't fault him for that perspective, but he's never going to move those coins for that price. Does he still consider himself a capitalist?

I'm sure of one thing, nobody would be able to take out 20 or 30 people, they'd look like they've been run through a garbage disposal after the first (surprise) victim.

Hi,

Gosh, I must be spoiled here in Washington State regarding PM purchases.

There's no sales tax on PM, and the buy/sell spreads on regular stuff is quite competitive.

And if I don't like what I see here in the Seattle area, I can always go down to Portland to Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals (ajpm.com) and I've been using them guys for years with NO problems whatsoever.

The coin stores in Tacoma aren't very good. I tell people that I will generally beat their sell price, and I will hand deliver what they want.

I was surprised to see the lack of quality of coin stores when I was down in Las Vegas a few months ago. First, they have sales tax on bullion, which makes no sense, because Nevada is the Silver State.

So junk silver makes no sense to purchase down there.

And on Gold Eagles, they were charging $50 over spot plus tax! Where do I sign up?

About the only thing I can see me going to a coin show for is to find a specific coin for a collection. Junk silver doesn't fit in...

Ok I went to the show today and picked up some junk silver coins. I picked up some stuff from the bargain bin where I was able to get silver at 12x face. I didnt see much else, but one guy had a bag of quarters in his case. I asked him what the story was since I couldnt make out the marker writing on the bag. He said he would either sell the whole bag (about $40 face) or I could pick and choose at 12x face. I asked if he had halves (slightly higher silver content due to less circulation) and he had a bag of over 350. I picked out 20 pieces and paid him. I wish I would have brought more money so that I could have bought the whole bag off of him. Overall though, the show was not as busy as it has been in the past, and it wasnt a full dealer bourse either. I attribute it partially to being the beginning of summer, partially to the 80-degree weather we had today, and partially to the economy (of course smart people like us are buying silver and coinage).

Just click a state near you.

As for security... I went to a show once and saw a guy's stuff get stolen. The article was on coinflation.com.

I paid 11.7x Face today. All Walkers in decent shape from the 30s and 40s. Seemed like a decent deal.

Did you get that at a local show? That's pretty decent price you picked them up for.

Try asking several dealers.. not just the ones that have it out in the case. It's possible that you may find a dealer in the current economy that is a more motivated seller.

I am going to a show here in Madison, WI this weekend and will report back on the junk Ag status. I know one guy that will be there but he has his priced too high. When silver was going for 12.5x face, he was asking about 15.5x face so I walked away. He is a nice guy but was just asking too much. The only junk silver I expect to find outside of him would be from the bargain bins.

As to here in Illinois if you've ever gone to a coin show there are many, many armed guards. Mostly not advertised with signs saying Security, but some do. At the larger ones at the Rosemont Convention Center there are probably more armed guards than customers sometimes. They are all over the place, inside and outside both. This is probably due to the wonderful feeling of security with our fantastically low crime rate her in the Chicago area. Stupid gun laws that are ever incresing and with absolutely no effect. Why should it. Criminals just don't pay attention to laws about guns.

Sorry off subject but I have to comment. Anybody ever wonder why ADULTS over 21 are considered "kids" if they are in school? Are they not adults? College students are supposed to be the brains of this country, but not be trusted with the tools of self defence. I guess if everything made since, we wouldn't have anything to talk about. Sorry about the rant(s). Some things really strike a nerve with me, like "self defence control"....

<----Off of soap box now.

As to carrying a fire arm to a coin show. AT all the coin shows in my area there are no cameras, knives, guns allowed inside the shows. If you have a licence to carry a firearm in this area you need a federal licence anyway and not easy to come by so most people just don't.

If I'm not mistaken, you are from Illinois. Very gun unfriendly state. In fact, one of the worst. My state, Missouri, allows you the chance to protect yourself in MOST circumstances. It's kinda crazy, cross a line on a map and you are almost defenceless, unless you are a bad guy....

As to junk Silver or just about anything in junk coins the best place is usually a flea market. Around me I go to 2 to 4 coin shows a month. During April there are enough coin shows to go to one almost 2 to 4 times a week. One is a 3 day show and one is a 4 day show. All the rest are just 1 or 2 day shows. At most Junk silver is present occationally but not as junk Silver but usually a bargain box. Usually for amateurs and kids. Some dealers will give something from that box free to kids as an incentive for thier parents to buy something. Most of the smaller, monthly shows are from local dealers and the really big ones have dealers from all over the country. Those seldom have anything in the way of Junk coins of any types. On flea market in my area has a dealer that appears to have a massive source of junk coins of every possilbe type and from almost any country. He is not really a coin dealer but just makes a lot of money selling coins and currency.

I've found the local and state flea markets to have more junk silver at the coin booths than most coin shows. Also the dealers at these shows will typically haggle with you too. I went to the New Years flea market here in Louisville when 40% halves were worth $2.25 and 90% halves were worth around $5.50 and hit up every dealer there for their halves. I got over 200 40% halves for $2 each and almost a whole roll of 90% Kennedy halves at $4 each. i just asked them to quote me a price then offered $2 each for every 40% half they had. All but one dealer went for it right away, the one that said no I hit up again on the way out and he gave in.

At the twice a year show here in Madison they have an armed guard. Other shows I have gone too in Milwaukee and Rockford didnt. I went to a larger show in Chicago two summers ago and there were a few armed guards visible.

As far as junk silver, it can be found sometimes. If you are going to a monthly show ask your favorite dealers to bring them. I only found one dealer at the Milwaukee show a week ago who was selling junk silver at about 15x face. I walked away. There were a few selling Morgans and Peace dollars for $16-$17/each that were common date/lower grade coins (G-VG). That's the cheapest I found.

I attend probably 10 coin shows each year and have the following observations:

Local dealers from the immediate location of the show may have junk US 90%, clad 40%, warnix and maybe even some foreign bullion for sale. It's not a real big deal to bring that along with the other coins and currency that they're trying to sell. Those who may fly to the show location or have no secure way to store it overnight probably won't have much or any.

Most dealers will buy junk silver from the walk-in public who attend the shows. Some may even have large cardboard signs or dry marker boards advertising their buy and sell prices. They're usually willing to turn it over for a fast profit unless they strongly believe that the market is going quickly higher. Most don't want to lug it back to their shop unless there's a good reason to do so.

Before I stop to talk to any dealers or think about any purchase, I do a complete walk-through of the site. I look how the tables are configured, where the aisles, restrooms and exits are located, the type and number of security people who are present, the size of the crowd, whether there are mostly single people there or whether there are some larger groups of 3 or more people who are walking around together, the type of general lighting and whether I feel comfortable about being there.

I've attended a couple of shows within the last 2 years that were loosely organized at a dreary union hall or dimly lit VFW post. At the VFW, there was a large crowd of non-show participants sitting at the adjacent bar and heckling some of the people who would walk by. I felt uneasy and left without making a purchase. Go with your gut instinct. It's usually right.

You can find lists in most coin magazines or just type in coin shows on a search. I go to two or three a year and most have ample supplies of junk silver. I still kick myself for not buying $9.00 morgan dollars about a year ago!!

I hope I never have to use it. You just need to be prepared. I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. That particular gun is an HK P2000SK. To get back on track kinda, where do I look to find local coin shows?

It is important to carry yourself with confidence. Don't look like a victim. Go with associates if possible, and bring personal protection; you'll be fine. Red alert here.

I go to coin shows all the time. Sometimes you see junk silver, sometimes you don't. As the market heats up it tends to come out more. It is heavy and the margins are not huge so most dealers will not lug it to the show.

I see a lot more of it at local coin club meetings.. and I am generally able to pick it up cheaper there.
