I bought a $25.00 box of pennies today and sorted out exactly 30% 1981 and older. I do not save the 1982s. I also got 9 wheats.

Nice job on the wheaties! (my wife takes all my wheat pennies, lol)

I don't know if you saw it, but I have the breakdown of 8 different boxes that I searched under the 'Articles' link on You must be logged in to see this link. I don't have the percentages figured out though, just the raw numbers of coins. I haven't kept score lately on the boxes I've searched, it is time consuming, at least the way I do it, but I will do a few more soon.

Here is a direct link to my copper/zinc/foriegn/wheaties breakdown: You must be logged in to see this link.

I sorted another box today and got 33% 81 and older plus 12 wheats. Found about 50 bright almost uncirculated 1964s. These things looked brand new except for some of them had some bag marks. I think as things are getting tighter with $3.00 gas and everything else going up people are cashing in the change that has been being saved.

I sorted another box today and came out great. I got 949 1959 to 1981s, 6 copper canadians, and 12 wheats. That is about 38% without the wheats and canadians. This is the best box that I have had yet. Could have been over 40% if I was saving the copper 82s.

Hello-
I think that the location of where the boxes or rolls of pennies come from makes a difference in the quantity of copper cents. For the last year or so, I have seen a consistent 23% or 24% in pre-82 copper cents from Wash. D.C. banks, and about 33% from banks from a town in West Virginia. I keep wondering when I'll start seeing a drop in those numbers, but so far it hasn't happened.

Hi centavito, and welcome.

I have wondered if location matters. I get all my pennies from the same town.

I think we will start seeing them disappear once the masses wake up to the free copper in the pre-82 cents. That will happen soon, I think, because I have been seeing more about this topic in mainstream news outlets.

Am I the only one who can tell by the "feel" of the penny if it is copper or not? I work with my sense of touch in my profession, but I would think most people could train themselves with practice.

I bought $35.00 worth of pennies from a bank that rolls there own today. It was like Christmas opening these rolls. I got 1063 59-81s, 20 wheats, 3 Canadians, 1 beautiful 1906 Indian Head, 2 Clip Errors, and 1 Blank Plachet. I could not believe my eyes when that Indian head rolled out of the wrapper. I have started watching the coins closer for errors. 1972 double dies can be worth quit abit.

Today I bought another $25.00 worth of pennies and got 805 59 to 81s, 16 wheats, and 8 canadian coppers. Still batting over 30% but who knows for how long.

I did another box today and got 816 59-81s, 14 wheats, and 6 Canadians. So that is 33% copper not counting 82s. I have started putting my 82s in a seperate box. I will resort them later after getting quite a few.

Greetings all! Just came across this site yesterday and bought my first box today(25.00). Sad to say my results were not as good as others but I must confess....IM HOOKED! It is the perfect relaxation tool and now fun hobby for me. Final tally: 354 of 1981 and older(did not save the 82's), 3 Canadian and 14 wheaties. I believe it's only like 7.42%. I just can't believe some are pulling 20-30%. Im not discouraged as I really had a blast. Now I just need to hopefully find a bank to take them unrolled because Im really not looking foward to that part. Maybe we should start a thread to discuss those coin sorting machines(I poked around on ebay today) to see which one's work best for the money. For any Seinfeld fans out there Im liking this endever to the episode where Kramer and Newman try to make money with soda can deposits. I told my wife that this is my get rich slow scheme. I was up last night late thinking of the possible ways this could be profitable but have just decided that it's good meditation time and any monetary gain will just be a bonus. Cheers.

New to the forum, but a veteran to penny sorting! My averages are anywhere from 30% to 34% but I do include copper 1982s (I do the sound test). In the last box I went through, I recorded 33.92% as copper. This includes twenty three Wheat pennies. I found seven Canadians and I think all were copper although there was a disparity in terms of weight. As of now, I do not include Canadian pennies in calculating occurance of copper.

Hey guys....

Bought some boxes of my own today...
Bank teller thought I was a total nut for buying 8 boxes and carting them out the door.

Got my daughter hooked this weekend

Hi Melbo, welcome!

I have never bought that many boxes at once, how the heck did you carry them?

My daughter likes to 'help' me too, but as she is only 2 1/2 she mostly spills them on the floor, lol.

Welcome Melbo,

Those boxes are heavy. A box of 175 rolls weighs around 60lbs.

Well, I went to my local bank today and they don't have the boxes (must be ordered) but they did offer to give me the pennies that their customers have turned in. I figgured what the heck and bought $20 worth.

Well i'm suprised. two dimes, one 1917 wheat, more 1940's wheats, and get this, one roll i opened had 49/50 pre 1982 pennies and one 1994. I'm thinking maybe someone else was sorting and turned in the wrong roll?

Welcome NJINJI.

What kind of percentages did you get from the other rolls? I have yet to get a dime in a roll but have gotten quite a few wheats.

Hi NJINJI,

I have had good luck with the individual rolls turned in by other customers. I got about $10 worth once that were about 75% copper. I am guessing this was from a penny jar someone had in their house for decades that they finally got around to turning in. I have found a few dimes in rolls too, always in coins wrapped and turned in by an individual.

If you have a larger bank in your area they should have boxes that you can have at any time.

My last two boxes were almost all 2006 pennies. I hate that.

Hi, the other rolls were about 20%-30% average. When I purchased a real box, they were about 20%. Also, when you buy the ones wrapped by people, your chances of getting dimes are greatly improved becuase people wrapping by hand are not nearly as efficient as machines that can distinguish by size.

I bought another box of pennies today and got 8 canadians, 11 wheats, and 779 59-81s. Still holding around 30%. I also bought 7 rolls of halves. I got 0 silver. I think the same thing is going to happen to the copper pennies.

Well i just went to another bank today (citibank). I asked for $50. They had one box and the rest they gave me as rolls. So i'm looking at the rolls, and some of them have dates on them. About 40/50 of the rolls were all pre 1982. Most of them 1979, 1980, 1981. They were hand rolled. Didn't really have to sort them... amazing.
